The Ministry of Hajj calls on pilgrims to remain in the Arafat camps
As part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's ongoing commitment to the safety and health of pilgrims, the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has issued an important directive to all pilgrims to remain in their camps in Arafat on the 9th of Dhul-Hijjah until 4:00 PM. This proactive measure is a crucial precaution to protect pilgrims from direct exposure to the scorching sun during peak hours, effectively reducing cases of heat exhaustion and sunstroke, especially given that the Hajj season coincides with the intense summer heat.
The historical and religious context of standing at Arafat
Standing at Arafat is the most important pillar of Hajj, as the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Hajj is Arafat.” Historically, the gathering of hundreds of thousands, even millions, of Muslims in one place at a specific time has presented a significant challenge on all organizational and health levels. Over the decades, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has dedicated all its resources to developing the infrastructure in the holy sites, from modern, air-conditioned, fire-resistant tents to the use of the latest crowd management technologies, to ensure that pilgrims can perform their rituals with ease, comfort, and complete safety.
The importance of preventive measures and their expected impact
These directives issued by the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah are of paramount importance at the local, regional, and international levels. Locally, these measures contribute to easing the pressure on the Saudi healthcare system and field hospitals in the holy sites by reducing the number of heat-related illnesses. Regionally and internationally, these measures send a reassuring message to millions of Muslims and pilgrims' families worldwide, affirming that the safety of the pilgrims remains a top priority for the Saudi leadership.
Transmitting the Arafat sermon and facilitating the performance of the rituals
To ensure pilgrims do not miss the profound spiritual atmosphere of this day, the Ministry explained that the Arafat Day sermon will be broadcast live via various visual and audio media to all camps, with simultaneous translation in several languages. This pioneering technological measure allows pilgrims to listen to the sermon with ease and tranquility within their air-conditioned camps, without needing to move or leave their locations, thus enhancing their comfort and preserving their physical well-being.
Strict adherence to approved crowd management plans
In a related context, the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah emphasized the necessity for all pilgrims and Tawafa companies to adhere to the approved crowd management plans and pre-determined schedules. The Ministry warned against venturing into pedestrian-only routes or areas not designated for pedestrians, as any violation could lead to serious disruptions in the crowd management system and negatively impact the smooth flow of movement between different locations within the holy sites.
Warning against climbing Mount Arafat
The guidelines also included an explicit call for pilgrims to refrain from ascending Mount Arafat during peak times and periods of extreme crowding. This warning stems from the serious risks that stampedes and overcrowding pose to the safety and lives of the pilgrims. The Ministry concluded its statement by emphasizing that strict adherence to these instructions and guidelines is the best way to perform the rituals with peace and tranquility, and enhances crowd management efficiency to ensure a safe, organized, and successful Hajj experience for all pilgrims.
