Eid al-Fitr 1447 Health Holiday: Appointments and Compensation

The Saudi Ministry of Health has officially announced the schedule for the Eid al-Fitr holiday for the year 1447 AH, specifying the holiday periods for civil service employees and those working under the self-employment system. This announcement is based on circulars issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development regulating working hours and official holidays in the government sector.

Details of vacation dates according to job categories

The ministry explained that there is a difference in the number of vacation days based on the employee's employment system, in order to ensure the continuity of work in vital facilities. The details are as follows:

  • Those subject to the Civil Service system: Employees on the Civil Service salary scale are entitled to a holiday of approximately 12 days. The holiday begins at the end of the workday on Thursday, 23 Ramadan 1447 AH (corresponding to March 12, 2026 AD), and work resumes after the Eid holiday at the end of the workday on Tuesday, 5 Shawwal 1447 AH (corresponding to March 24, 2026 AD).
  • Self-Employment and Contractual Programs: This category includes employees in the positions of Undersecretaries, Assistant Undersecretaries, the Competency Program, and contractors. Their leave begins at the end of the workday on Wednesday, 29 Ramadan 1447 AH (corresponding to March 18, 2026), and ends at the end of the workday on Tuesday, 5 Shawwal 1447 AH, for a total of approximately 6 days.

Work mechanism and compensation during the holiday period

Given the critical nature of the healthcare sector, which requires constant, round-the-clock readiness, the Ministry emphasized the necessity for those assigned to work during the holiday period to accurately record their attendance and departure times through the "Hayyak" service. Regarding the rights of assigned employees, the Ministry indicated that compensation for work during the Eid holiday will be in the form of alternative leave days only, in accordance with the applicable regulations and procedures.

The importance of the continuity of health services

Organizing healthcare staff leave is of paramount importance, extending beyond mere administrative considerations. This careful coordination aims to balance the healthcare practitioner's right to enjoy the holiday with their family with their professional and humanitarian duty to ensure hospitals and health centers remain fully operational. This scheduling plays a pivotal role in guaranteeing that medical services provided to citizens and residents across the Kingdom are not disrupted during the holiday season, which typically sees shifts in the patterns of emergency and medical cases.

The regulatory context of government holidays

Holiday leave in Saudi Arabia is governed by central regulations issued by the Ministry of Human Resources. However, entities with continuous operational needs, such as the Ministry of Health and security sectors, have their own regulations that allow them flexibility in determining shift schedules. This reflects an evolution in human resources management within the public sector, ensuring operational efficiency without compromising employee rights, which aligns with the objectives of developing the government work environment and increasing productivity.
