NAUDI president announces plans to resume defense cooperation with Saudi Arabia
The head of the National Association of Ukrainian Defense Industries (NAUDI) revealed new strategic directions aimed at resuming defense cooperation with Saudi Arabia, focusing on sustaining and expanding this cooperation to include advanced technological and industrial fields. This announcement comes at a crucial time, as the defense industry undergoes major global transformations, underscoring the importance of building strong and flexible international partnerships.
Dimensions of defense cooperation and future prospects
Statements issued by the NAUDI leadership confirmed that the plans extend beyond traditional supply deals to include the exchange of expertise and technology transfer, aligning with the rapid advancements in the military industries. The association aims to leverage the field experience gained by the Ukrainian defense industry in recent years to provide innovative and effective solutions that meet the growing needs of the Saudi market.
Alignment with the Kingdom's Vision 2030
This announcement takes on particular significance when viewed through the lens of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, which prioritizes the localization of military industries. Saudi Arabia aims to localize more than 50% of its military spending by 2030, opening up significant opportunities for international companies and organizations like NAUDI to enter into strategic partnerships that include establishing joint production lines, training national talent, and developing advanced defense technologies within the Kingdom.
Geopolitical context and strategic importance
Talk of resuming cooperation comes within a complex geopolitical context, where recent global events have demonstrated the importance of diversifying arms sources and strengthening national defense capabilities. Ukraine possesses a long-standing industrial heritage in the defense sector, encompassing aviation technologies, armored vehicles, missile systems, and drones—areas of considerable interest in modern military doctrine.
On the diplomatic front, Saudi Arabia has maintained balanced relations and a positive role on the international stage, providing substantial humanitarian aid to Ukraine. This has created a solid foundation of mutual trust upon which to build further cooperation in the economic and defense sectors. The resumption of this cooperation reflects the desire of both parties to enhance security and stability and to mutually benefit from their industrial and financial capabilities to serve their shared interests.
Towards a sustainable partnership
The head of NAUDI emphasized that the goal is not merely temporary cooperation, but rather building a sustainable and long-term relationship. This includes exploring joint research and development (R&D) projects, ensuring that both parties remain at the forefront of defense technology development. Combining Ukrainian expertise in manufacturing and development under challenging conditions with Saudi Arabia's ambition and enormous investment capabilities will create a successful model for international cooperation in the defense sector.
