Meteorology: Red alert and heavy rain in the Eastern Province and Riyadh
The National Center for Meteorology issued a series of important weather alerts on Thursday, warning of an unstable weather condition affecting several regions in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The center raised the alert level to “red” in the Eastern Province, while warning of moderate rain that may occur in parts of the Riyadh region, calling on everyone to take precautions.
Red alert: Heavy rains and floods in the Eastern Province
In detailing the weather situation in the Eastern Province, the National Center for Meteorology issued a red alert , its highest level of warning, indicating expectations of heavy rainfall affecting the governorates of Khafji, Nairyah, and Qaryat Al-Ulya. The center explained that this weather system will not be limited to rain alone, but will also be accompanied by severe weather phenomena, including strong winds leading to near-zero horizontal visibility, in addition to hail, flash floods in valleys and ravines, and powerful thunderstorms. This weather system is expected to continue, God willing, until 11:00 PM this evening.
Weather conditions in Riyadh: Moderate rain and active winds
In conjunction with the rainy weather in the Eastern Province, the center issued an orange alert for the Riyadh region, forecasting moderate rainfall including the governorates of Thadiq, Huraymila, Rumah, Dhurma, and Marat. The forecast indicated that this rain would be accompanied by strong winds, reduced visibility, and the possibility of hail and localized flash floods. This weather pattern is expected to continue until 10:00 PM.
The importance of adhering to safety and civil defense instructions
Given these weather fluctuations, the relevant authorities, primarily the General Directorate of Civil Defense, emphasize the necessity of staying away from areas where water accumulates, including valleys and dams, during rainfall. These warnings are of paramount importance due to the nature of the heavy rains, which can lead to the formation of rapidly spreading flash floods, posing a danger to hikers and those traveling on roads. Drivers are also advised to exercise extreme caution while driving in conditions of reduced visibility and to avoid speeding.
Context of the climate situation and its impact
This rainfall is part of the typical weather fluctuations for this time of year, as the Kingdom experiences periods of atmospheric instability resulting from the convergence of low-pressure systems. While this rainfall plays a vital role in replenishing groundwater reserves and irrigating vegetation, it requires infrastructure capable of handling large volumes of water in a short period. The National Center for Meteorology plays a pivotal role in monitoring these weather events using the latest radar and satellite technologies to ensure early warnings are delivered to citizens and residents, thus contributing to mitigating risks and protecting lives and property.
