Newcastle crush Qarabag 6-1 with a super hat-trick from Gordon in the Champions League

Newcastle United achieved a resounding away victory, putting one and a half feet into the Champions League round of 16, after sweeping aside their Azerbaijani hosts Qarabag with a resounding 6-1 scoreline in the first leg of their playoff tie on Wednesday evening.

Anthony Gordon's historic night

The match, held in the Azerbaijani capital Baku, witnessed an exceptional performance from English star Anthony Gordon, who established himself as the undisputed hero of the encounter. Gordon managed to score four goals (a super hat-trick), leading his team to complete dominance of the game from the opening minutes, thus deservedly earning the Man of the Match award and the commemorative hat-trick ball.

The Magpies' onslaught began very early, with Gordon opening the scoring in just the third minute, throwing the home side's plans into disarray. Only five minutes later, German defender Malik Thiaw doubled the lead in the eighth minute, making the task virtually impossible for the Azerbaijani team.

Karabakh defenses collapse

Newcastle continued their relentless attacking pressure, and Gordon returned to the scoresheet again in the 32nd minute with a penalty kick, before completing his personal hat-trick in the 34th minute. Before the referee blew the whistle for the end of the first half, Gordon insisted on finishing the scene with his personal four (super hat-trick) and the fifth goal for his team from the penalty spot again in the final seconds, ending the first half with a disastrous result for Qarabag of five goals to nil.

The second half and qualification was logically secured

In the second half, the pace of the game slowed down somewhat on the part of the visitors, allowing Qarabag to score a consolation goal through Elvin Zafar Guliyev in the 55th minute. However, substitute Jacob Murphy refused to let the match end without making his mark, completing the English six-goal haul in the 72nd minute, confirming the significant technical difference between the two teams.

Significance of the victory and its continental importance

This resounding victory carries significant implications for Eddie Howe's team, sending a strong message to their European rivals that Newcastle are once again a force to be reckoned with in continental competitions. The win also boosts the players' confidence as they continue their season and underscores the success of the club's sporting project in competing at the highest level.

The two teams are scheduled to meet again next Tuesday at St. James' Park, Newcastle's home ground, for the second leg. The English side will enter the match with relaxed nerves, as their qualification for the Round of 16 is now a mere formality, given the significant lead and the evident level of play displayed in the first leg.
