National Water Company pumps treated water to irrigate the Qurayyat International Road
In a move reflecting the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s commitment to promoting environmental sustainability and efficient water resource management, the National Water Company announced the launch of a unique initiative in Al-Qurayyat Governorate. This initiative involves pumping 3,000 cubic meters per day of tertiary-treated water to irrigate green spaces along the international highway. This project, implemented in fruitful cooperation with the municipality and other relevant entities, is part of a broader strategy aimed at maximizing the use of available resources and enhancing the urban landscape, in line with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030.
Project background and strategic importance
Like other countries in the region, the Kingdom faces significant water security challenges due to its geographical location and desert climate. Historically, it has relied heavily on seawater desalination and non-renewable groundwater to meet its growing needs. Recognizing the importance of conserving these precious resources, the Saudi government has adopted ambitious policies to diversify water sources, with the reuse of treated wastewater playing a central role. This shift towards a circular water economy is essential to ensuring sustainable development and meeting the needs of future generations.
Project details and its local impact
The new project includes the construction of a 1.5-kilometer pipeline connecting the treatment plant to the irrigation station dedicated to trees and green spaces. With a daily capacity of 3,000 cubic meters, the project will directly alleviate pressure on freshwater sources previously used for irrigation. Locally, the project is expected to have a tangible positive impact; increasing green spaces along the international highway will not only improve air quality and moderate the climate but also enhance the aesthetic appeal of the governorate, thus raising the quality of life for residents and visitors. Furthermore, as a vital land gateway, Al-Qurayyat Governorate's infrastructure development reflects a bright and progressive image of the Kingdom.
Alignment with Vision 2030 and national initiatives
This project is fully aligned with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030, specifically the “Ambitious Nation” pillar, which focuses on environmental sustainability. It also supports major national initiatives such as the “Saudi Green Initiative,” which aims to plant billions of trees and combat desertification. Using treated wastewater for afforestation is a practical application of sustainable development principles, transforming a resource once considered an environmental burden into a valuable asset that serves multiple developmental purposes and contributes to achieving the desired ecological balance across the Kingdom.
