A Hand Plants Initiative in Al Rams: Planting 100 Seedlings to Support Green Saudi Arabia

The Al-Rams project in central Awamiyah witnessed a remarkable environmental initiative: the launch of the unique tree-planting program, "A Hand Plants, a Land Blossoms." This initiative was a result of fruitful cooperation between the project management and the Qatif Governorate Municipality, with the active participation of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture branch. The event culminated in the planting of 100 diverse saplings, with the broad participation of volunteers and environmental activists who came together to contribute to increasing the green space.

Supporting Saudi Arabia's green goals and Vision 2030

This initiative is an integral part of the comprehensive national movement underway in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to achieve the objectives of the "Saudi Green Initiative" launched by His Royal Highness Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. These efforts aim to combat desertification, reduce carbon emissions, and improve air quality, reflecting the Kingdom's firm commitment to environmental protection and addressing climate challenges at both the local and global levels.

In this context, the director of the Al-Rams project, Mohammed Al-Turki, affirmed that this campaign represents a natural extension of national efforts, noting that the strategic partnership between the public and private sectors is the primary driver of the success of such initiatives. Al-Turki explained that today's event is just the beginning of a series of sustainable campaigns that will not be confined to the Al-Rams project but will extend to cover multiple vital locations in the Qatif Governorate, with the aim of enhancing vegetation cover and giving the area a sustainable aesthetic and environmental character.

For his part, Ali Al-Matroud, Deputy Mayor of Qatif Governorate for Services, emphasized that this initiative aligns with the core objectives of the Quality of Life Program, one of the programs under the Kingdom's Vision 2030, which aims to improve the lifestyle of individuals and families and build a society where its members enjoy a balanced way of life. Al-Matroud praised the vital role of the media as a partner in raising environmental awareness, stressing that cooperation between the municipality, the Ministry of Environment, and the private sector is laying the foundation for a new phase of organized environmental action that ensures the sustainability of resources for future generations.

Smart agricultural choices for a sustainable environment

On the technical and agricultural front, environmental activist Reda Mahdi Al-Khunaizi explained that the selection of tree species was not arbitrary, but rather based on precise criteria suited to the nature and climate of the Eastern Province. The campaign focused on planting fruit trees and shade trees such as mulberry, jujube, hollyhock, and ficus.

Al-Khunaizi added that these species are distinguished by their high tolerance to high temperatures, soil salinity, and water scarcity, making them an ideal choice for ensuring sustainability and reducing future maintenance and irrigation costs. He pointed out that the upcoming trend will focus more on strengthening the region's agricultural identity by intensifying the cultivation of native trees such as the Indian almond and the fig tree, which possess a remarkable ability to self-grow and adapt to harsh environmental conditions after the first year of planting, thus contributing to the creation of a balanced and stable ecosystem.
