Turki bin Khalid calls for an independent committee for the integrity of Saudi football

In a move aimed at enhancing transparency and improving the sports system in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Prince Turki bin Khalid, the former president of the Saudi Football Federation and the former president of the Arab Federation, put forward a fundamental proposal calling for the creation of a new regulatory body to ensure the integrity of local competitions.

Proposal to establish an independent oversight committee

Prince Turki bin Khalid explicitly called for the establishment of a committee completely independent of the Saudi Arabian Football Federation and the Saudi Professional League. The proposed committee's role would center on overseeing the meticulous implementation of regulations, rules, and laws to ensure the highest standards of integrity and safety in Saudi football competitions, thereby directly contributing to strengthening the confidence of sports fans and the media in the outcomes of local tournaments.

Confronting skepticism and rumors

In a statement carried by the media, Prince Turki bin Khalid affirmed, "I propose the establishment of a committee (completely independent) from the Federation and the League, tasked with (monitoring) the implementation of regulations and laws to ensure the integrity and fairness of competition in Saudi football and enhance public confidence in it." His Highness also highlighted a crucial point concerning the overall climate within the sports community, explaining that "the increasing level of skepticism, rumors, and controversy" is negatively impacting and hindering the strategic objective of the sports system, which is to elevate Saudi football to international standards.

The importance of timing and the context of sports development

This proposal comes at a time when Saudi sports are undergoing unprecedented transformations, bolstered by the Kingdom's Vision 2030, which has positioned the sports sector as a cornerstone of quality of life and the economy. With the Saudi Professional League attracting some of the world's top stars and its market value soaring, the need to strengthen governance and institutional oversight has become paramount. The existence of independent integrity and oversight committees is standard practice in major European and international leagues, where these committees act as impartial arbiters to resolve disputes and ensure a level playing field for all competing clubs.

Enhancing public and institutional trust

Implementing such a proposal would reduce the public tension that often accompanies major competitive matches, as having an independent body would provide a reliable reference point for everyone, free from conflicts of interest. This step complements the significant efforts undertaken by the Ministry of Sport and the Saudi Arabian Football Federation to develop the infrastructure and legislation, ensuring that sports administration keeps pace with the tremendous technical advancements on the field.
