Qassim Environment: 731 inspection tours to ensure food safety during Ramadan

As part of intensive preparations for the holy month of Ramadan 1447 AH, the Qassim branch of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture conducted a large-scale field campaign to ensure the readiness of markets and slaughterhouses. This campaign was carried out with the active participation of the branch of the National Center for Plant Pest and Animal Disease Prevention and Control (Wiqa'). These proactive measures aim to guarantee the highest standards of food safety and public health for citizens and residents during the holy month, which typically sees a significant increase in demand for food products and meat.
Details of inspection tours and seizures
The field campaign focused its efforts on monitoring establishments' compliance with health and veterinary requirements. Specialized teams conducted 731 inspection tours across various markets in the region. These thorough tours resulted in the detection and recording of 155 violations and warnings issued to non-compliant establishments, reflecting the firm enforcement of regulations. Furthermore, to ensure products are free of chemical contaminants, 130 samples to the pesticide residue laboratory for analysis to confirm their safety. Additionally, 15 products that did not meet standards were confiscated, thus guaranteeing the availability of safe and healthy food for Ramadan meals.
Strict procedures in slaughterhouses and meat safety
In the meat sector, a cornerstone of Ramadan consumption, inspection teams monitored operations at slaughterhouses to ensure the safety of slaughtered animals. A total of 6,479 head . Thanks to rigorous veterinary oversight, 230 carcasses deemed unfit for human consumption were condemned, either partially or completely , highlighting the vital role of veterinarians in protecting the community from foodborne illnesses.
Enhancing community awareness and strategic importance
The efforts of the Qassim Environment Authority were not limited to oversight and enforcement, but also extended to awareness campaigns, based on the belief that the consumer is the first line of defense. Participating teams implemented 12 awareness campaigns aimed at raising health and environmental awareness among both consumers and those working in the sector. These campaigns are of paramount importance as they come at a crucial time, preceding the peak season, thus contributing to enhancing food security and achieving the Ministry's objectives of protecting public health and ensuring the sustainability of food supply chains according to the highest quality standards.
