Qassim weather: Warning of a dust storm and zero visibility

The National Center for Meteorology in Saudi Arabia issued an advanced warning regarding unstable weather conditions affecting the Qassim region, cautioning against a dust storm and strong winds that could lead to near-zero horizontal visibility. The center explained that these weather conditions began affecting the region and will continue until 8:00 AM today.

According to the alert, the affected areas include the city of Buraidah, as well as the governorates of Unaizah, Al-Asyah, Al-Badai, Al-Bukayriyah, Ash-Shamasiyah, Al-Muthnib, and Uyun Al-Jawa, and the centers of Al-Thamiriyah and Al-Ammar. The center indicated that the effects of this weather system include strong winds and a sharp decrease in horizontal visibility, potentially dropping to between 3 and 5 kilometers, posing a danger to traffic and vehicles.

The climatic context of dust storms in the region

Dust and sandstorms are a common weather phenomenon in Saudi Arabia and the Arabian Peninsula in general, due to its vast desert landscape, such as the Rub' al Khali and the Nafud al-Kabir. These storms typically arise from the passage of low-pressure systems or strong surface winds, especially during seasonal transitions. The seasonal northerly winds are a major contributor to these phenomena, blowing strongly from the northwest and carrying enormous quantities of dust and sand over long distances.

Expected effects and the importance of warnings

These weather phenomena have far-reaching effects that extend beyond simply reducing visibility. Locally, dust storms pose a significant risk to public health, especially for the elderly, children, and those with respiratory conditions such as asthma and allergies, as the fine particles suspended in the air can cause serious health complications. Therefore, health authorities consistently recommend staying indoors and keeping windows tightly closed during these storms.

Regarding infrastructure and transportation, the lack of visibility significantly increases the likelihood of traffic accidents on highways and local roads. Air traffic may also be affected, potentially leading to delays or cancellations of flights to and from airports in the region. Relevant authorities, such as Civil Defense and Traffic Police, are taking proactive measures to raise awareness among citizens and residents, urging them to exercise extreme caution and adhere to issued instructions to ensure their safety.
