Planting 400,000 smart mangrove trees in Rabigh to support the environment
In a significant step reflecting the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's commitment to environmental protection and sustainability, the Governor of Rabigh launched an ambitious initiative to plant 400,000 smart mangrove trees along the governorate's beaches. This vital project is a strategic collaboration with the Makkah Region branch of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture and the regional branch of the National Center for Vegetation Development and Combating Desertification. The launch was attended by prominent leaders, including the Director General of the Ministry branch, Engineer Waleed Al-Dughais, and the Director General of the Center branch, Adel Al-Tayari.
Strengthening the Saudi Green Initiative
This initiative is not an isolated event, but rather an integral part of the broader "Saudi Green Initiative" launched by His Royal Highness the Crown Prince, which aims to plant 10 billion trees across the Kingdom in the coming decades. Afforestation projects in coastal areas are of particular importance, as the Kingdom seeks to increase vegetation cover and reduce carbon emissions, ultimately achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2060. The selection of Rabigh for this initiative underscores the geographical and environmental significance of the Red Sea coast in supporting biodiversity.
The importance of mangroves and the "blue carbon" treasure
Mangrove trees are distinguished as one of the most important natural solutions for combating climate change, as they are known for their exceptional ability to absorb and store carbon many times more effectively than tropical forests, a phenomenon scientifically known as "blue carbon." In addition to their climate role, these trees play a pivotal role in protecting coastlines from erosion caused by waves and storms, and they provide safe natural breeding grounds for fish and marine life, thus enhancing food security and supporting the local economy of fishermen in the region.
Smart model and sustainable partnership
What distinguishes the Rabigh initiative is its adoption of the "smart afforestation" concept, which relies on modern technologies to accurately measure environmental impact and enhance transparency in monitoring tree growth rates and carbon absorption. This project is implemented through an integrated model that combines the public and private sectors, embodying the Kingdom's Vision 2030 in empowering the private sector to contribute to sustainability projects. This partnership aims to create a green investment environment that contributes to improving quality of life and reinforces the Kingdom's regional and international leadership in marine environmental conservation and coastal vegetation development.
