Heavy rain and hail in Jazan and Al-Baha | Weather news in Saudi Arabia

On Thursday evening, the Jazan and Al-Baha regions witnessed rainfall ranging from moderate to light, accompanied in some locations by hail and thunderstorms, which led to the flow of a number of valleys and streams and brought a refreshing atmosphere to the southwestern highlands of the Kingdom.

In the Jazan region, moderate rainfall was concentrated in the governorates of Al-Ardah, Al-Harth, and Al-Dayer Bani Malik, as well as a number of their affiliated centers and villages. This rain contributed to moderating the weather and creating stunning natural scenery, as the land was saturated and water flowed in the valleys for which the region is known.

In the Al-Baha region, rainfall was scattered, ranging from moderate to light, and included parts of Al-Baha city and its suburbs, as well as the governorates of Al-Aqiq, Baljurashi, Al-Qura, Bani Hassan, Al-Mandaq, Al-Makhwah, Qalwah, and their affiliated centers. The rainfall was accompanied by thunderstorms and hail, leading to the flow of several valleys and streams, a phenomenon familiar to residents at this time of year.

The climatic context of the southwestern region

The southwestern highlands of Saudi Arabia, encompassing regions such as Jazan, Al-Baha, and Asir, possess a unique climate that contrasts sharply with the desert landscape prevalent in most of the country. These areas are influenced by monsoon winds originating from the Indian Ocean, resulting in seasonal rainfall, particularly during the spring and summer months. This climatic pattern makes them among the most fertile regions in the Kingdom, supporting agriculture and providing a rich biodiversity environment.

The importance and expected effects of rainfall

These seasonal rains are of paramount importance both locally and nationally. Locally, they are the lifeblood of the agricultural sector, irrigating the mountain terraces renowned for cultivating unique crops such as Khawlani coffee, fruits, and grains. The rains also replenish groundwater reserves and fill dams, which is vital for achieving water security in the region.

On the other hand, despite its numerous benefits, the mountainous terrain of the region makes it vulnerable to flash floods. Authorities such as the National Center for Meteorology and the General Directorate of Civil Defense frequently issue warnings to citizens and residents to stay away from wadis (valleys) and exercise caution during rainfall. From a tourism perspective, these rains transform the highlands into a major domestic tourist destination, as the lush landscapes and mild climate attract visitors from across the Kingdom, boosting the local economy and supporting the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 in developing the tourism sector.
