Reasons for steadfastness in the religion of God and the importance of righteous companionship | Sermon from the Grand Mosque

From the pulpit of the Grand Mosque in Mecca, the esteemed Imam and Khateeb of the Grand Mosque, Sheikh Dr. Yasser Al-Dosari, delivered a comprehensive sermon in which he emphasized that one of the most important pillars of a Muslim's faith is steadfastness in the religion of God. He explained that the true sign of the acceptance of Hajj and the pleasure of the Most Merciful is the continued obedience and steadfastness in faith after the completion of the rituals—a call that resonates deeply in a time rife with distractions and challenges facing the individual Muslim.

The pulpit of the Two Holy Mosques: A message of faith to the Islamic world

The Friday sermons delivered from the Grand Mosque in Mecca are not merely local religious directives, but universal messages reaching millions of Muslims across the globe. Throughout history, this pulpit has been a beacon of guidance, addressing contemporary issues of concern to the Muslim community and offering spiritual solace. In the digital age, these sermons are broadcast live and translated into multiple languages, amplifying their impact and solidifying the role of the Two Holy Mosques as a spiritual center for Muslims worldwide.

Sheikh Al-Dosari’s emphasis on steadfastness comes at a crucial time, serving as a reminder to returning pilgrims of the importance of integrating the lessons of Hajj into their daily lives. It also addresses a universal human need for spiritual stability amidst rapid social and cultural transformations. The message aims to strengthen individual faith, which in turn reinforces the fabric of Muslim communities and encourages them to adhere to their principles with clarity and confidence.

Good companionship and its role in achieving steadfastness in the religion of God

Sheikh Al-Dossari specifically highlighted the profound influence of an individual's social environment, noting that "keeping good company" is one of the greatest aids to righteousness. He cited the Prophetic Hadith: "A person is influenced by the religion of his close friend, so let each of you consider whom you befriend." This underscores the Islamic perspective on the role of the environment in shaping an individual's character and commitment. Good companions are a true support system, encouraging good deeds, offering sincere advice, and acting as a shield against negative influences and pitfalls.

Essential pillars for strengthening faith

Besides good companionship, Sheikh Al-Dossari explained that steadfastness has other complementary causes, the greatest of which is achieving pure monotheism and seeking God's help. Following this comes adherence to the Book of God and the Sunnah of His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), not only through recitation and memorization, but also through understanding and application. He also emphasized the importance of consistently remembering God, which refines the heart, and of persistently supplicating to Him, asking Him for steadfastness in His religion until death, for this is God's commandment to His prophets and believers.

At the end of his sermon, the Sheikh stressed that steadfastness in the religion of God is not a state of inactivity, but rather a continuous striving and constant struggle against the self, nourished by a close connection with God, knowledge of His book, and the invaluable support of a righteous community.
