Riyadh launches 1,000 volunteer opportunities as part of the Saudi Green Initiative

In a strategic move reflecting the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s unwavering commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development, the Director General of Education in Riyadh, Dr. Nayef bin Abed Al-Zare’, launched 1,000 environmental volunteer opportunities. This pioneering initiative comes in active partnership with the Riyadh Municipality, coinciding with the celebration of “Saudi Green Initiative Day,” a landmark in the Kingdom’s journey towards a brighter environmental future.

Details of the initiative and events in Riyadh schools

During the launch ceremony for these volunteer opportunities, Dr. Nayef Al-Zare' explained that the General Directorate of Education is proud of its extensive participation in implementing the afforestation plan, which encompasses a large number of neighborhoods in Riyadh, in addition to schools and their affiliated educational facilities. He noted that the number of individual and collaborative activities implemented in schools to contribute to achieving the objectives of the "Green Riyadh" project has exceeded 3,400. These intensive efforts aim to enhance environmental awareness among male and female students, support afforestation initiatives, and contribute directly to reducing carbon emissions, thus creating a tangible and sustainable impact on the ground.

Historical context: What is the Saudi Green Initiative?

To understand the significance of this event, it is essential to consider the broader context and historical background of the Saudi Green Initiative. Launched in 2021 by His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, this ambitious initiative aims to unify sustainability efforts across the Kingdom, increase reliance on clean energy, and reduce carbon emissions. Its primary objective is to plant 10 billion trees throughout the Kingdom in the coming decades. This initiative is a crucial step towards achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2060, positioning the Kingdom among the world's leading nations in combating climate change.

Riyadh Green Project and its local impact

At the local level, these volunteer opportunities directly align with the objectives of the “Green Riyadh” project, one of Riyadh’s major initiatives launched by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz. The project aims to plant 7.5 million trees in the capital, which will contribute to lowering temperatures, improving air quality, and increasing per capita green space. Engaging the education sector and students in this project enhances the quality of life in the capital and contributes to achieving the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 in building a vibrant society and a thriving environment.

Regional and international importance of environmental efforts

The impact of these initiatives extends beyond the local level to the regional and international spheres. The Kingdom is also leading the “Green Middle East Initiative,” which aims to plant 50 billion trees in the region. Launching 1,000 volunteer opportunities in the education sector sends a powerful message to the international community that Saudi Arabia is building an environmentally conscious generation, ready to contribute to global solutions to combat global warming and desertification.

Promoting a culture of volunteer work within the framework of Vision 2030

Finally, launching these volunteer opportunities represents significant support for the Kingdom's Vision 2030 goal of reaching one million volunteers. Combining volunteer work with environmental protection creates a dual value: it builds character and strengthens national identity, while simultaneously contributing to the protection of the planet for future generations, ensuring that every tree planted today becomes a sustainable legacy for tomorrow.
