Riyadh is the first city in the Middle East to receive the Globally Active City certification
In a historic step reflecting the rapid development witnessed by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Royal Commission for Riyadh City announced that the capital has been awarded the “Global Active City” certification, making it the first city in the Middle East to achieve this prestigious international ranking. This recognition is the culmination of tireless efforts aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles, increasing physical activity levels, and achieving community well-being for all residents and visitors.
Global standards and international recognition
This certification is awarded by the Active Well-being Initiative, a joint venture between the International Federation of Sport for All (TAFISA) and Evaleo, and is directly supported by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Obtaining this certification is no easy feat, requiring leading cities to implement a rigorous system of administrative and structural standards that ensure the sustainability of physical activity and its integration into the city's daily life—something Riyadh has achieved with distinction.
Riyadh and Vision 2030: A Comprehensive Urban Transformation
The CEO of the Royal Commission for Riyadh City, Engineer Ibrahim bin Mohammed Al-Sultan, affirmed that this achievement is a practical manifestation of the unlimited support from the wise leadership and an embodiment of the objectives of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030. The Quality of Life Program, one of the Vision’s most important programs, played a pivotal role in this transformation, focusing on humanizing cities and transforming Riyadh into a people-friendly environment that encourages walking and outdoor exercise.
This ranking reflects the success of national strategies in integrating urban planning with health and sports requirements. In recent years, Riyadh has witnessed the launch of mega-projects that support this trend, such as the “Green Riyadh” project and the “Sports Track” project, which aim to provide vast green spaces and safe paths for pedestrians and cyclists, making it easier for residents to adopt an active lifestyle.
Strategic partnership and institutional integration
This achievement would not have been possible without the combined efforts of various sectors. The Royal Commission expressed its gratitude to its strategic partners, most notably the Ministry of Sport and the Saudi Sports for All Federation. More than 20 government and private entities participated in fulfilling the certification requirements, reflecting a high level of governance and collaborative institutional work to foster a culture of community sports.
Expected impact: Sustainable health and a vibrant society
Riyadh's designation as a "Worldwide Active City" carries significant implications that extend beyond mere prestige; it establishes a new era of health awareness within Saudi society. This ranking is expected to contribute to:
- Increasing the rate of weekly exercise among the population, which contributes to reducing the rates of chronic diseases associated with lack of movement.
- Enhancing the tourism and investment appeal of Riyadh as a global destination that offers a high quality of life.
- Encouraging more community initiatives and sporting events that target all age groups.
In conclusion, this achievement confirms Riyadh’s commitment to continuing its journey to be one of the world’s most livable cities, placing human health and well-being at the forefront of its development priorities.
