Riyadh Municipality prepares observatories in Tamir, Shaqra and Al-Hariq to observe the Ramadan crescent

The Riyadh Municipality announced the completion of all preparations and arrangements for setting up the crescent moon observation sites in Tamir, Shaqra, and Al-Hariq, as part of its ongoing efforts to serve the relevant committees and observers in preparation for sighting the crescent moon of Ramadan. These preparations included preparing the roads leading to the observatories, providing all necessary services, and offering the required logistical support to ensure the accuracy of the observation process and the safety of participants.

The importance of the event and its religious and social context

The sighting of the crescent moon marking the beginning of Ramadan is of paramount importance in Saudi Arabia and the wider Muslim world. The Supreme Court and religious authorities rely on this sighting to determine the start of the holy month. The efforts of the Riyadh Municipality are an integral part of the comprehensive system supporting this religious practice. Government agencies strive to provide an ideal environment for observation, combining suitable geographical locations with modern technologies, thus minimizing errors and facilitating the work of the official moon-sighting committees.

Qualitative development of astronomical observatories

The three observatories underwent comprehensive upgrades to ensure their maximum readiness:

  • Tumair Observatory: It is one of the most prominent observation sites in the Kingdom, and it has witnessed a qualitative leap through the combination of the site that was rehabilitated in 1436 AH, and the modern facilities that were added to be an advanced technological interface that relies on the latest telescopes and observation devices, making it a focal point for astronomical observation in the region.
  • Shaqra Observatory: This official observatory was established in 1431 AH, and it has undergone maintenance and modernization operations to ensure its continued operation with high efficiency that keeps pace with the renewed requirements of accurate monitoring operations, taking advantage of its distinctive geographical location.
  • Fire Observatory: This site represents the authentic traditional aspect of the monitoring process, as it is located on a high plateau that allows visibility with the naked eye, reflecting the diversity in monitoring mechanisms adopted by the Secretariat, which combines modern technology and the traditional experience of observers.

Integrated logistical support and infrastructure

The Riyadh Municipality's efforts extended beyond simply equipping the monitoring stations; they also included the surrounding infrastructure. Field teams paved and leveled the rough roads leading to these stations, which are often located in elevated and remote areas, to ensure the safe arrival of committees and the public. The operational plan also included preparing reception areas and parking lots, and implementing public safety standards to ensure smooth traffic flow during the monitoring period, which typically sees a large turnout of interested parties and citizens.

These steps come as a confirmation of the integrated role played by the Riyadh Municipality with various governmental and legal sectors, to serve religious occasions and facilitate the performance of rituals for Muslims throughout the region, harnessing all its human and material capabilities to make this year’s monitoring season a success.
