Riyadh prepares observatories in Tamir, Shaqra and Al-Hariq to sight the Ramadan crescent

As the holy month of Ramadan approaches, the eyes of the Islamic world turn to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, specifically to the moon-sighting sites that determine the official start of the fast. As part of these important seasonal preparations, the Riyadh Municipality announced the completion of all equipment and upgrades at three of the region's most important moon-sighting observatories: Tumair, Shaqra, and Al-Hariq. This ensures the smooth operation of the observation process and supports the relevant committees.
Comprehensive development of infrastructure and services
The Secretariat has completed a series of development projects aimed at enhancing the efficiency of these sites to accommodate observers and specialists. These projects included paving and equipping the roads leading to the observation platforms to ensure easy access and smooth traffic flow, especially given the anticipated large turnout of interested parties and media representatives. The efforts also encompassed the maintenance of existing facilities, the preparation of reception areas and parking lots, with a strong focus on raising safety standards around the observatories, which are often located in elevated and rugged areas. Furthermore, full logistical support was provided to the official observation committees to create a comprehensive and well-organized environment.
The religious and strategic importance of Riyadh observatories
These observatories hold paramount importance that transcends local boundaries, as the Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia's decision to confirm the start of Ramadan relies on the testimonies received from these committees. The Tumair Observatory is one of the most renowned observing sites in the Kingdom and the region, thanks to its unique geographical features: clear skies and a suitable altitude that allows for a clear view of the horizon, making it a historical destination for astronomers. These facilities enhance the accuracy of observations, whether with the naked eye or using modern astronomical telescopes.
Distinctive historical and geographical sites
The Riyadh observatory system includes strategic locations carefully selected over the years. In addition to the recently renovated Tumair Observatory, opened under the patronage of His Royal Highness Prince Dr. Faisal bin Abdulaziz bin Ayyaf, Mayor of Riyadh, the Shaqra Observatory stands out as an officially recognized site, as does the Al-Hariq Observatory, situated on a high plateau offering an ideal viewing angle far from the light pollution of the cities. Historically, the inhabitants of these areas relied on naked-eye observation, thanks to the keen eyesight and expertise of those who observed the crescent moon – a legacy that the Municipality is keen to support today with the latest technologies and services.
These intensive efforts reflect the Riyadh Region Municipality’s keenness to activate its social and religious role, and to contribute to facilitating this great ritual, in line with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 goals of improving the quality of life and upgrading municipal services provided to residents and visitors on all occasions.
