Public transport tickets in Riyadh: Annual and termly subscriptions for students

The Royal Commission for Riyadh City, represented by the Riyadh Public Transport Project, announced the launch of a new suite of flexible ticketing options, effective January 1st, in a move aimed at promoting a culture of public transport and facilitating mobility within the capital. The new products include a "Semester Ticket" for students, in addition to an "Annual Ticket" available to all passenger categories, providing economical and sustainable solutions for unlimited travel at a fixed cost.

Flexible options for smart mobility

This step comes in response to the needs of Riyadh residents and visitors, as the new tickets offer greater freedom of movement across the Riyadh bus network and the Riyadh Metro at a reduced cost compared to daily or individual tickets. The semester ticket targets students, easing their financial burden and providing a safe and reliable means of transportation during the academic term, while the annual ticket serves employees and frequent commuters, encouraging them to rely on public transport as a primary alternative to private vehicles.

King Abdulaziz Public Transport Project: A cornerstone of Vision 2030

The Riyadh Public Transport Project (Riyadh Metro and Riyadh Buses) is one of the world's largest urban transport projects and a key component of the Kingdom's ambitious Vision 2030 plans. The project aims to transform the quality of life in the Saudi capital by providing an integrated network comprising six metro lines spanning 176 kilometers and 85 stations, complemented by a city-wide bus network. This massive project not only provides transportation but also reshapes Riyadh's urban landscape, connecting its vital commercial, residential, and urban centers.

Expected economic and environmental impact

Providing long-term ticketing options (quarterly and annual) is expected to increase the use of public transport, which will have a positive impact on several levels:

  • Reducing traffic congestion: Reducing reliance on private cars will necessarily lead to smoother traffic flow on Riyadh’s main streets.
  • Environmental protection: Reducing carbon emissions from car exhaust, which contributes to improving air quality and achieving the goals of the Saudi Green Initiative.
  • Economic savings: Reducing fuel and car maintenance costs for individuals and families, and directing this spending towards other developmental aspects.

The Authority calls on all beneficiaries to take advantage of these smart options and start their new year with a more convenient and sustainable lifestyle, stressing its continued commitment to developing services that meet the aspirations of the capital’s residents.
