A factory producing counterfeit cleaning products was raided in Riyadh | Consumer Protection
Another blow to commercial fraud in the capital
As part of its ongoing efforts to ensure market safety and protect consumers, the field inspection teams of the Riyadh Municipality, represented by the municipality's southern sector, in cooperation with relevant authorities, seized an illegal warehouse operating unlawfully, manufacturing and packaging cleaning products using counterfeit trademarks of well-known brands. This operation underscores the vigilance of the Kingdom's regulatory bodies and their firm stance against all forms of commercial fraud that threaten public health and the economy.
During the raid, large quantities of products and raw materials were seized, including 1,200 packages filled and ready for distribution in the markets, and 2,200 empty packages that were being prepared for filling. A large 10,000-liter tank containing unknown components and chemicals used in manufacturing was also confiscated, along with 7,500 adhesive labels bearing counterfeit brand logos. Samples of the seized materials were sent to specialized laboratories for analysis to determine their composition, their potential risks to public health, and their compliance with approved standards and specifications.
General context: The Kingdom's war on counterfeit products
This incident is not isolated; rather, it is part of a comprehensive national strategy adopted by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to combat commercial fraud and protect intellectual property rights. Multiple government agencies, such as the Ministry of Commerce, the Saudi Food and Drug Authority, and Saudi Customs, work in close coordination with municipalities and local authorities to track down networks that promote counterfeit and adulterated products. These efforts aim to achieve the goals of Vision 2030 by creating a safe and fair investment environment, enhancing consumer confidence in the local market, and protecting the national economy from the damage caused by illicit trade.
The importance of the process and its expected impact
The importance of this crackdown lies in its health and economic dimensions. From a health perspective, such operations prevent the entry of potentially hazardous and unapproved cleaning products into homes, which can cause skin allergies, respiratory problems, and other health risks, especially for children. Economically, it protects legitimate brands from unfair competition, preserves the reputation of both domestic and legally imported products, and ensures that consumers do not waste their money on substandard and ineffective products. The strict measures taken by the authorities send a strong deterrent message to anyone who might consider jeopardizing the health and safety of citizens and residents.
The Riyadh Municipality continues to emphasize that the monitoring campaigns are ongoing and continuous, calling on all residents to be active partners in these efforts by immediately reporting any violations or suspicious sites through official communication channels such as the “My City” application or the unified reporting number 940, to ensure rapid intervention and immediate handling of violations.
