Robotic heart surgery: Saving two pilgrims in one day in Mecca

In a remarkable medical achievement reflecting the advanced state of healthcare services in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Heart Center at King Abdullah Medical City in Makkah, a member of the Makkah Health Cluster, successfully saved the lives of two pilgrims, one from Nigeria and the other from Uzbekistan. This was accomplished through robotic heart surgeries performed in a single day to treat complex coronary artery blockages and critical cardiac conditions, as part of the comprehensive healthcare system provided by the Kingdom to pilgrims during the Hajj season of 1447 AH.

This significant medical achievement comes within the framework of the Kingdom's historical and ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and health of pilgrims. For decades, Saudi Arabia has invested heavily in developing a comprehensive healthcare infrastructure in the Holy Sites, including hospitals equipped with the latest technologies, specialized health centers, and mobile field medical teams. Providing advanced technologies such as robotic surgery to serve pilgrims free of charge underscores the Kingdom's humanitarian mission and its commitment to harnessing all available resources to ensure the comfort of the guests of God and enable them to perform their rituals in good health and safety.

Harnessing technology to serve pilgrims

The medical team overseeing the two cases explained that urgent surgical intervention was necessary due to the critical condition of the pilgrims. The first case involved a Nigerian pilgrim who arrived suffering from a late-onset myocardial infarction with chronic and complex coronary artery occlusions, resulting in a sharp decline in cardiac function to between 35% and 40%. The second case involved a pilgrim from Uzbekistan who suffered an acute myocardial infarction accompanied by severe pulmonary edema and significant cardiac impairment, with cardiac function dropping to between 30% and 35%.

Following an immediate and thorough assessment by the multidisciplinary cardiac team, the decision was made to perform a qualitative and precise surgical intervention using advanced robotic surgical technology, which represents the pinnacle of development in minimally invasive open-heart surgery.

The medical team successfully performed two coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgeries on the same day using robotic surgery.
