This was accomplished through robotic heart surgeries performed in a single day to treat complex coronary artery blockages and critical cardiac conditions, as part of the comprehensive healthcare system provided by the Kingdom to pilgrims during the Hajj season of 1447 AH.
This significant medical achievement comes within the framework of the Kingdom's historical and ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and health of pilgrims. For decades, Saudi Arabia has invested heavily in developing a comprehensive healthcare infrastructure in the Holy Sites, including hospitals equipped with the latest technologies, specialized health centers, and mobile field medical teams. The medical team overseeing the two cases explained that urgent surgical intervention was necessary due to the critical condition of the pilgrims. The first case involved a Nigerian pilgrim who arrived suffering from a late-onset myocardial infarction with chronic and complex coronary artery occlusions, resulting in a sharp decline in cardiac function to between 35% and 40%. The second case involved a pilgrim from Uzbekistan who suffered an acute myocardial infarction accompanied by severe pulmonary edema and significant cardiac impairment, with cardiac function dropping to between 30% and 35%.
Following an immediate and thorough assessment by the multidisciplinary cardiac team, the decision was made to perform a qualitative and precise surgical intervention using advanced robotic surgical technology, which represents the pinnacle of development in minimally invasive open-heart surgery.
