Russian attacks violate the ceasefire in Ukraine, injuring 9 civilians

Ukrainian authorities reported on Sunday that at least nine civilians were wounded in a series of Russian attacks targeting several areas of the country, on the second day of a unilaterally declared temporary ceasefire. These attacks cast doubt on the viability of the ceasefire and exacerbate the suffering of civilians amid the ongoing conflict.

Details of the attacks and ceasefire violations

Despite a noticeable decrease in long-range drone attacks compared to the period before the ceasefire, according to the Ukrainian Air Force, shelling has not completely ceased. In the Dnipropetrovsk region of eastern Ukraine, Russian drone strikes injured a three-year-old girl and a 23-year-old rescue worker. According to the region's governor, Oleksandr Vilkul, the rescue team was en route to assist residents in the village of Mirivska when their vehicle was directly hit.

In the southern Kherson region, Russian strikes injured four people, including a 19-year-old and a 53-year-old city council employee. In the neighboring Mykolaiv region, two people were injured in a drone attack targeting a civilian vehicle. In the Zaporizhzhia region, a man was wounded in a similar attack, according to the local governor. Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry accused Ukrainian forces of committing thousands of ceasefire violations in a 24-hour period, including drone attacks.

Background of the conflict and previous truces

The roots of this conflict can be traced back to 2014, but it escalated dramatically with the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, igniting the largest military conflict in Europe since World War II. This was not the first time a temporary truce had been declared; previously, Russia unilaterally announced a 36-hour ceasefire for Orthodox Christmas in January 2023. However, that truce, like the current one, was met with skepticism by Kyiv and its Western allies, who viewed it as a Russian attempt to buy time and regroup, and it was quickly violated by an exchange of shelling.

Importance and expected effects

The continued attacks on civilians and infrastructure during declared ceasefires undermine any chance of building trust between the parties and complicate international mediation efforts aimed at achieving a peaceful solution. Domestically, these violations exacerbate the humanitarian tragedy and place civilians, including children and rescue workers, in immediate danger. Regionally and internationally, these events reinforce the narrative that a lasting and comprehensive peace remains elusive and underscore the need for continued international support for Ukraine and pressure on Russia to cease its aggression and abide by international humanitarian law. The war has already resulted in the deaths and injuries of hundreds of thousands and the displacement of millions, creating the largest humanitarian crisis in Europe in decades.
