Russian airstrike kills 4 in Donetsk: Details of the attack on eastern Ukraine
Eastern Ukraine experienced another bloody night, with a Russian drone strike on Thursday night killing four civilians, including a young child, and injuring five others, according to authorities in the Donetsk region on Friday. This attack is part of an ongoing series of military operations targeting infrastructure and residential areas in the region, which has seen some of the fiercest fighting since the start of the war.
Details of the attack on Cherkassky
Vadim Vilashkin, head of the Donetsk regional military administration, explained via Telegram that the airstrike directly targeted the city of Cherkasy. The Ukrainian official confirmed that the attack severely damaged two residential buildings, turning the night into a nightmare for the peaceful residents.
According to data released by the Donetsk Regional Prosecutor's Office, the attack occurred late Thursday evening, specifically at approximately 10:50 PM local time (8:50 PM GMT). Initial investigations revealed a family tragedy: the airstrike killed a 32-year-old man and his five-year-old son, as well as two of their neighbors who were present at the time of the attack.
The damage did not stop at the deaths. The five injured, including the mother of the slain child, suffered severe burns and deep psychological trauma as a result of the force of the explosion and the loss of their loved ones, highlighting the heavy human cost of this conflict.
Donetsk: The epicenter of the strategic conflict
These attacks have acquired a complex strategic and political dimension, as the Donetsk industrial region (Donbas basin) has been one of the most important battlegrounds since the outbreak of the conflict. In September 2022, Moscow declared the annexation of Donetsk, along with three other regions, as Russian territory—a move not recognized by the international community and considered by Kyiv to be an illegal occupation.
Since the start of Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, this resource-rich and industrially abundant region has been transformed into a center of violent combat operations, resulting in the deaths of tens of thousands of soldiers and civilians, and widespread destruction of infrastructure.
Drone warfare and its impact on civilians
This attack reflects the growing reliance on drones in the modern warfare between Russia and Ukraine. These aircraft are used to launch precise or indiscriminate attacks that overwhelm air defenses and sow panic among the population. Observers suggest that the continued targeting of residential areas in eastern Ukraine is intended to pressure the Ukrainian leadership and destabilize regions near the front lines.
The residents of these areas live under constant bombardment, with local authorities repeatedly calling on civilians to evacuate in order to save their lives, but many remain trapped or refuse to leave their homes despite the imminent dangers.
