Details of dozens killed and wounded in Russian strikes on Ukraine

In a new escalation on the ground reflecting the complexities of the military landscape, Russian strikes on Ukraine have killed at least two people and injured dozens. These developments come as Moscow intensifies its deadly attacks using a diverse arsenal of weapons, amid stalled peace talks and rising international tensions.

Details of the attacks on Kherson and Chernigov

The Ukrainian regional prosecutor's office reported that Russian forces launched a heavy attack on the Kherson region in southeastern Ukraine. The attack involved heavy artillery, mortars, and suicide drones. The airstrikes and artillery shelling resulted in the death of a 42-year-old man when a drone targeted a civilian vehicle, and injured 16 others, including a minor and three police officers.

In the northern part of Kyiv, specifically in the strategically important Chernihiv region near the border, Russia launched a ballistic missile. Dmytro Brzezinsky, head of the region's military administration, confirmed that the attack damaged buildings belonging to a local company, and initial reports indicate at least one person was killed.

Intense airstrikes on Donetsk

The attacks were not limited to the south and north, but extended to eastern Ukraine, which has witnessed fierce fighting since the beginning of the invasion. Regional official Vadim Vilashkin stated that Russian airstrikes targeted the city of Druzhkivka in the Donetsk region using guided bombs. This bombing resulted in injuries to at least nine people, as well as significant damage to two administrative buildings and a residential building, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the region.

Historical context: Unprecedented escalation in the drone war

These strikes gain significant importance when placed in their historical context since the outbreak of full-scale war in late February 2022. A recent analysis by AFP revealed that March saw a record number of Russian drone attacks on Ukrainian territory, surpassing any other month since the start of the invasion. This tactical shift toward heavy reliance on drones aims to overwhelm Ukraine's air defense systems and strike critical infrastructure at a lower cost than ballistic missiles.

Expected impact locally and internationally

Domestically, these ongoing attacks exacerbate the suffering of civilians and trigger new waves of internal displacement, in addition to destroying energy infrastructure and public utilities. Regionally and internationally, this escalation sends a clear message that the path to a diplomatic solution remains blocked. It also places additional pressure on Ukraine’s Western allies, particularly the United States and NATO countries, to expedite the delivery of advanced air defense systems such as Patriot missiles and vital munitions to prevent the collapse of Ukrainian front lines under this relentless Russian military pressure.
