Safety of pilgrims in Arafat: 4 tips to avoid heights
Ongoing efforts to ensure the safety of pilgrims
As part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and security of pilgrims to the Holy Mosque in Mecca, the Pilgrims' Awareness Center of the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has issued a set of important guidelines and instructions. These guidelines aim to educate pilgrims on best practices to ensure they can perform their rituals with ease and comfort, avoiding any risks that might disrupt their spiritual journey, especially during the standing at Arafat, which is the most important pillar of Hajj.
All of Arafat is a place of standing: correcting misconceptions and alleviating overcrowding
The center clarified, through an official post on the “X” platform, a crucial legal and regulatory principle: “All of Arafat is a place of standing, and climbing Mount Arafat is not required.” This clarification aims to correct some misconceptions among pilgrims who believe climbing the mountain is necessary to complete the rituals. Historically and religiously, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) stood at the mountain during his Farewell Pilgrimage, but he established the principle of ease when he said, “I stood here, and all of Arafat is a place of standing.” This prophetic guidance removes hardship for Muslims and prevents the dangerous overcrowding that could occur if millions attempted to climb to a limited geographical area.
4 essential safety tips for the holy sites
To ensure maximum protection, the center stressed the need to adhere to four key guidelines while in the holy sites:
- Stay away from steep inclines: Avoid climbing mountains and rough paths that could lead to slipping or falling.
- Adherence to designated routes: Walk only on paved and prepared roads that are designed to safely accommodate human density.
- Caution regarding unstable rocks: Avoid standing or walking on moving or unstable rocks to prevent injuries.
- Follow the instructions of the competent authorities: Respond immediately to the directives of the security personnel and the organizational teams present on site to manage the crowds.
Strategic importance and expected impact of the guidelines
These awareness guidelines are of paramount importance at the local, regional, and international levels. Locally, they directly contribute to the success of strategic crowd management plans implemented by security and health authorities, significantly reducing stampedes and injuries resulting from physical exertion. Furthermore, avoiding climbing steep inclines protects pilgrims from the risks of heat exhaustion and sunstroke, especially during periods of high temperatures.
At the international level, the pilgrims' adherence to these instructions reflects the success of the Saudi system in managing the world's largest annual human gathering. These awareness efforts align with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030, which prioritizes serving the pilgrims, enriching their religious experience, and providing them with the utmost comfort and safety, ensuring their safe return home after a smooth and secure spiritual journey.
