SAR launches a competition to manufacture 10 trains for the Northern Network to increase operational capacity

In a strategic move aimed at transforming the Kingdom's rail transport sector, the Saudi Railway Company (SAR) has officially announced a global tender for the manufacture and supply of 10 new passenger trains for its Northern Network. This announcement is a key component of the company's ongoing efforts to develop the transport system and enhance the efficiency of passenger services, directly aligning with the objectives of the National Transport and Logistics Strategy stemming from the Kingdom's Vision 2030.

Competition details and schedule

SAR clarified that the scope of the competition extends beyond mere supply, encompassing a comprehensive process that includes the design and manufacture of new trains according to the latest international standards, as well as the provision of long-term fleet maintenance services to ensure asset sustainability and enhance operational readiness. The company has set May 11, 2026, as the deadline for receiving bids from competing companies, in accordance with the approved government tendering procedures.

A leap in the capacity of the northern network

The CEO of Saudi Railways, Dr. Bashar bin Khalid Al-Malik, affirmed that this project represents a strategic objective to meet growing demand. The introduction of the ten new trains is expected to significantly increase the operational capacity of the Northern Network, tripling its current capacity and providing more than 2.4 million seats annually. This expansion will enhance the network's ability to accommodate the increasing number of passengers traveling between the cities along the line.

Strategic importance and national context

The North Train network is of particular importance due to its length of approximately 2,750 kilometers, serving as a vital artery connecting the capital, Riyadh, to the northern cities and extending to the Jordanian border, passing through major stations including Al Majma'ah, Al Qassim, Hail, Al Jawf, and Al Qurayyat. The project to add new stations, such as the Al Zulfi station, will further enhance service access for a wider segment of citizens and residents.

This project falls within the broader context of the Kingdom's efforts to transform the transport and logistics sector into a key driver of economic diversification. Increased reliance on railways not only facilitates mobility but also supports environmental sustainability goals by reducing carbon emissions from cars and trucks, as well as enhancing road safety on highways.

Integration of the railway transport system

SAR does not operate in isolation from other networks. This competition coincides with other development projects, including the current manufacturing of 10 new trains dedicated to the Eastern Network (Dammam-Riyadh). This synchronization reflects the comprehensive vision to unify and enhance service standards across all national railways, paving the way for a future where the Kingdom becomes a global logistics hub connecting three continents, providing safe, fast, and comfortable transportation options for travelers.
