Saudi Arabia advances 9 points in the 2025 Universal Health Coverage Index

In a move reflecting the success of its strategic health sector plans, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia achieved a significant international milestone by making substantial progress in the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) index, jumping a full 9 points from 74 to 83. This progress placed the Kingdom tenth globally among the G20 countries, according to the 2025 Global Monitoring Report issued by the World Health Organization and the World Bank Group.

A leap towards the "very high" category

This achievement marks a significant leap forward for the Saudi healthcare system, as the Kingdom has moved into the category of countries with "very high" coverage on the index, far surpassing the global average of 71 points. This ranking underscores the strength of the Kingdom's healthcare infrastructure and its capacity to provide comprehensive, equitable, and sustainable healthcare services to all segments of society, thus reinforcing the concept of national health security.

Vision context and health sector transformation program

This achievement cannot be separated from the broader context of the Kingdom's Vision 2030, specifically the "Health Sector Transformation Program" launched by the leadership as a roadmap towards an integrated healthcare system. Since the Vision's inception, the Kingdom has worked to restructure the healthcare sector, shifting its focus from solely on treatment to prioritizing prevention and implementing a modern healthcare model. Significant investments in digital health (such as the Sehaty app and the Nafees platform) and improved access to services have contributed to achieving these record-breaking figures in a short period compared to international standards.

The four pillars of progress

Commenting on this event, the Deputy Minister of Health for Population Health, Dr. Abdullah Asiri, explained that this progress is the result of systematic work based on four main pillars:

  • Maternal and child health and reproductive health: through intensive care programs that reduced mortality rates and enhanced the health of emerging generations.
  • Combating infectious diseases: through immunization programs and accurate epidemiological surveillance.
  • Addressing chronic diseases: through promoting healthy lifestyles and early detection.
  • Service readiness: Ensuring easy access to health services in all geographical areas.

Strategic importance and expected impact

This ranking carries strategic implications that extend beyond mere numbers. Locally, this indicator signifies a direct improvement in the "quality of life" for citizens and residents, a key objective of the Vision. Regionally, it solidifies Saudi Arabia's position as a leader in healthcare innovation in the Middle East and North Africa. Internationally, this advanced ranking enhances the confidence of international organizations and investors in the efficiency of the Saudi healthcare system, bolstering the Kingdom's bid to host major global events and underscoring its commitment to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3 on good health and well-being.
