Saudi Arabia condemns the Kuwait attack and affirms the importance of shared Gulf security

The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's strongest condemnation of the hostile attacks targeting the sisterly State of Kuwait using missiles and drones. In an official statement, the Ministry emphasized Saudi Arabia's firm and unequivocal stance against any violation of state sovereignty or any attempt to threaten the security and stability of the region.

The Kingdom affirmed its full solidarity with the State of Kuwait, its government and people, in the face of these attacks, reiterating its absolute support for all measures taken by Kuwait to preserve its sovereignty, security, stability, and the safety of its citizens and residents. This stance reflects the depth of the fraternal and historical ties that bind the two brotherly countries.

A tense regional context and historical background

This attack comes amid heightened regional tensions, as the Arabian Gulf region has witnessed a series of similar attacks in recent years targeting vital facilities and infrastructure in several Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. Drone and ballistic missile attacks are a common tactic employed by armed groups backed by regional powers to destabilize the region and project their influence.

This incident brings to mind the deep security ties between Riyadh and Kuwait, which were particularly strengthened after the Kingdom’s historic stance in leading the international coalition to liberate Kuwait in 1991. Since then, joint defense agreements and collective Gulf security have become the cornerstone of the GCC countries’ strategy to counter external threats.

Importance and potential impacts

The Saudi position is of paramount importance on several levels. Domestically, it sends a reassuring message to the Kuwaiti people that their strategic depth, represented by the Kingdom and the Gulf states, stands with them. Regionally, this solidarity affirms the unity of the Gulf ranks, and that any attack on a member state of the Gulf Cooperation Council is an attack on all members, thus strengthening their collective deterrent power.

Internationally, this escalation draws renewed attention to the dangers of the proliferation of advanced weapons, such as drones and missiles, in the hands of non-state actors, and the impact this has on the security of international waterways and the stability of global energy markets, given that the Gulf region is a vital artery for global oil supplies. This incident is expected to lead to intensified diplomatic and security consultations among the countries of the region and their international allies to bolster defense capabilities and intelligence sharing to counter these recurring threats.
