Saudi Arabia condemns Iranian attacks on Bahrain and affirms its solidarity

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia expressed its strong condemnation and denunciation of the acts of sabotage targeting the Kingdom of Bahrain, affirming that the Iranian attacks on Bahrain constitute a blatant violation of the sovereignty and stability of a sisterly and neighboring state. In an official statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Saudi Arabia emphasized its full support for and solidarity with the Kingdom of Bahrain in confronting all threats to its security and stability, and its support for all measures taken by Manama to preserve the safety of its citizens and residents.

Roots of tension: Iranian interventions and destabilization of the region

This Saudi condemnation is not without precedent; rather, it is the latest link in a long chain of regional tensions fueled by Iranian policies in the region. Historically, relations between Iran and the Gulf states, particularly Bahrain, have experienced periods of both rapprochement and escalation, but they have taken an increasingly confrontational turn since the 1979 Iranian Revolution. The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states view with concern what they perceive as Iran's ongoing attempts to "export its revolution" and destabilize existing regimes by supporting proxies and groups in several Arab countries. Bahrain, with its unique demographic makeup, is a particularly sensitive arena for these interventions, with Manama frequently accusing Tehran of supporting terrorist cells and inciting sectarian strife to undermine civil peace.

The repercussions of Iranian attacks on Bahrain and Gulf security

The significance of Saudi Arabia’s firm stance lies in its reflection of a unified Gulf vision that the security of any GCC member state is an integral part of the security of the entire Gulf Cooperation Council. Targeting Bahrain is not merely an attack on Manama, but a direct threat to the entire region, including Saudi Arabia. This solidarity underscores the depth of the strategic and historical ties between Riyadh and Manama, which were clearly demonstrated by the support provided by the Saudi-led Peninsula Shield Force to Bahrain in 2011 to help restore order and stability. Any escalation against Bahrain also threatens international navigation in the vital waters of the Arabian Gulf, a key artery for global energy supplies, thus giving these events a dangerous international dimension.

An international stance is needed to deter threats

In closing, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia called upon the international community to shoulder its responsibilities and stand firmly against these hostile acts and blatant Iranian interference, which violate international laws and conventions and threaten regional and international peace and security. This stance underscores the necessity of a unified international front to deter Iran’s destabilizing behavior, ensure respect for the sovereignty of states and non-interference in their internal affairs, and safeguard a secure and stable future for the Middle East region.
