Saudi Arabia condemns the infiltration of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard into Kuwait
The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s strong condemnation and denunciation of the infiltration of an armed group affiliated with the Iranian Revolutionary Guard into Kuwait’s Bubiyan Island, in a move it described as a blatant attack on the sovereignty of the sisterly State of Kuwait and a clear violation of international law and the Charter of the United Nations.
A blatant violation of Kuwaiti sovereignty
The Ministry affirmed in its statement that this hostile act constitutes a grave violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the State of Kuwait, emphasizing the Kingdom's categorical rejection of such attacks, which threaten the security and stability of the region. It explained that the infiltration of armed elements with the aim of carrying out hostile acts undermines international efforts to build trust and restore security and stability to the Arabian Gulf region, which is already suffering from multiple tensions.
Background of regional tensions
This incident comes amid ongoing tensions between Iran and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has long been accused of destabilizing activities in the region, both through direct intervention and by supporting armed proxies in countries such as Yemen, Syria, Lebanon, and Iraq. The Gulf states view these activities as a direct threat to their national security, leading to a climate of mistrust and caution in diplomatic relations. Such incidents, if confirmed, reinforce Gulf and international concerns about Iran's regional behavior and its impact on international navigation and energy security.
Strategic importance and potential repercussions
Bubiyan Island holds immense strategic importance for Kuwait, situated near vital shipping lanes in the northern Arabian Gulf. Any unauthorized military activity in this area threatens not only Kuwait but also freedom of navigation and the security of global energy flows. This incident is expected to escalate diplomatically, with Kuwait having already summoned the Iranian ambassador and delivered a formal protest note. Regionally, the incident reinforces Gulf solidarity, as evidenced by the swift issuance of a supportive statement from Saudi Arabia. Internationally, these developments may prompt major powers to reassess their policies toward Iran, and the issue could be raised at the UN Security Council as a threat to international peace and security.
Saudi Arabia's unwavering solidarity with Kuwait
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs concluded its statement by affirming the Kingdom's full solidarity with the State of Kuwait, its government and people, and reiterating its absolute support for all measures taken by Kuwait to preserve its sovereignty, security, and stability. The Kingdom called upon the international community to uphold its responsibilities by condemning these violations and working to ensure respect for the sovereignty of states and non-interference in their internal affairs.
