Saudi Arabia condemns the Israeli aggression against Lebanon and demands the protection of its sovereignty
The Kingdom rejects the violation of Lebanon's sovereignty and calls on the international community to take action
The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's strong condemnation and denunciation of the Israeli aggression against Lebanon, affirming its categorical rejection of the military escalation and the violation of Lebanese sovereignty. In an official statement, the Kingdom stressed the necessity of protecting Lebanon and its brotherly people from the repercussions of this aggression, which threatens to destabilize the entire region. The Kingdom called upon the international community to assume its responsibilities to halt these military actions and put an immediate end to them, to ensure that violence and chaos do not spread further in a region already suffering from multiple crises.
This Saudi stance comes within a long history of tensions on the Lebanese-Israeli border, which has witnessed multiple rounds of conflict, most notably the 2006 war that caused widespread destruction and led to UN Security Council Resolution 1701, calling for a complete cessation of hostilities. Regional and international powers fear that the current escalation could lead to the collapse of this fragile resolution and plunge the region back into a cycle of full-blown violence, with dire consequences for international peace and security.
The repercussions of the Israeli aggression against Lebanon and the risks of sliding into a regional war
The significance of the Saudi position lies in its being issued by a major regional power with considerable political and economic weight, sending a clear message to the international community about the urgent need to contain the crisis. Any large-scale Israeli incursion into Lebanese territory not only threatens Lebanon but also risks igniting a regional war that could draw in other parties, further complicating the geopolitical landscape of the Middle East in an unprecedented way. The Saudi call emphasizes that military solutions will not bring lasting security to any party, and that the only path to stability lies in respecting international law and the sovereignty of states.
Emphasis on the Taif Agreement and the sovereignty of the Lebanese state
The Saudi statement did not neglect to emphasize fundamental principles for internal stability in Lebanon. The Kingdom stressed the importance of adhering to the Taif Agreement, which ended the Lebanese Civil War and laid out a roadmap for state sovereignty. It also emphasized the necessity of abiding by the Lebanese government's decisions that restrict weapons to the state and its legitimate institutions only, indicating the importance of extending state authority over all its territory as a fundamental guarantee of security and stability. This emphasis reflects a firm Saudi view that a strong and fully sovereign Lebanese state is the only way to protect Lebanon from foreign interference and spare it the ravages of regional conflicts.
