Saudi aid to Sudan: 1,700 food baskets to support displaced people
As part of its ongoing humanitarian efforts, the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center distributed 1,700 food baskets in the Baw locality of Blue Nile State in the Republic of Sudan. This aid targeted the most vulnerable and displaced families, benefiting 8,292 individuals, as part of the “Madad” initiative to support the brotherly Sudanese people, which will continue until 2026.
This aid comes at a critical time, as Sudan is experiencing one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, which has worsened dramatically since the outbreak of conflict in April 2023. The conflict has displaced millions of people internally and forced hundreds of thousands to seek refuge in neighboring countries, placing immense pressure on already limited resources and causing severe shortages of food, water, and healthcare. According to UN reports, millions of Sudanese are facing acute food insecurity, making external assistance a vital lifeline for many.
Historical context and the Saudi role
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has a long history of providing humanitarian and development support to Sudan, stemming from the fraternal and historical ties that bind the two countries. With the outbreak of the recent crisis, the Kingdom was among the first countries to respond to the humanitarian appeal, launching an air and sea bridge to transport urgent relief aid, in addition to evacuating its own citizens and those of dozens of other countries from conflict zones. The King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre serves as the Kingdom's humanitarian arm, implementing diverse projects in the food security, health, and shelter sectors, in coordination with UN agencies and local partners to ensure that aid reaches those who need it most.
The importance of aid and its expected impact
Locally, these food baskets directly contribute to alleviating the suffering of affected families and providing them with essential food supplies, thus strengthening their resilience in the face of harsh conditions. Regionally and internationally, these efforts reflect the Kingdom's commitment to its role as an active and responsible member of the international community and its dedication to promoting security and stability in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region. These initiatives also underscore the importance of international solidarity in addressing major humanitarian crises and highlight the Kingdom's pivotal role in leading global relief efforts, striving to achieve food security and alleviate human suffering wherever it may be.
