Saudi Arabia supports UNRWA with $2 million to address crises
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, represented by the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center, announced a new financial contribution of US$2 million to support the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). This contribution reflects the Kingdom's longstanding humanitarian role and its historical commitment to supporting the Palestinian people and alleviating their suffering.
General context and UNRWA's historical role
UNRWA was established by a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly in 1949 to provide assistance and protection to Palestinian refugees who lost their homes and livelihoods as a result of the 1948 Nakba. The agency operates in five fields: Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, the West Bank (including East Jerusalem), and the Gaza Strip, providing vital services to millions of registered refugees. These services include essential areas such as education, healthcare, relief and social services, infrastructure and camp improvement, and microfinance.
For decades, UNRWA has been a vital lifeline for Palestinian refugees, contributing to the education of successive generations, providing primary healthcare, and delivering emergency assistance during recurring crises and conflicts in the region. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is one of the agency's most prominent and long-standing donors, having generously supported its programs and budget for many years, recognizing the crucial role UNRWA plays in maintaining regional stability and upholding the rights of refugees.
The importance of Saudi support in light of current challenges
This support is doubly important at this time, as UNRWA faces unprecedented financial challenges that threaten its ability to continue providing essential services. This crisis has been exacerbated by recent events in the Gaza Strip, which have led to a large-scale humanitarian catastrophe, dramatically increasing the scale of needs. The Saudi grant is expected to enable the Agency to respond to urgent needs, particularly in the areas of food security, non-food items, and shelter for affected Palestinian refugees.
At both the regional and international levels, this contribution sends a clear message about the Kingdom's continued commitment to supporting the Palestinian cause on all fronts. It also serves as an incentive for other donor countries to increase their support for UNRWA, ensuring its ability to fulfill its humanitarian mandate at a time when international solidarity is most needed. This support underscores that humanitarian solutions remain a top priority, alongside political efforts aimed at achieving a just and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian question.
