Al-Jubeir discusses strengthening cooperation between Saudi Arabia and Costa Rica

In a significant diplomatic move aimed at strengthening cooperation between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Central American countries, His Excellency Adel bin Ahmed Al-Jubeir, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Member of the Council of Ministers, and Special Envoy for Climate Affairs, met in San José, Costa Rica, with Mr. Manuel Tovar Rivera, the newly appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs and Worship of the Republic of Costa Rica. This meeting took place during an official visit by His Excellency Minister Al-Jubeir to Costa Rica, reflecting the Kingdom's commitment to diversifying its international partnerships and expanding their geographical reach.

At the outset of the meeting, Minister Al-Jubeir extended his warmest congratulations to Mr. Rivera on assuming his new post, expressing his best wishes for his success in his duties. Following this, the two sides reviewed bilateral relations between their friendly countries and discussed ways to strengthen and develop them across various fields of mutual interest, in a manner that serves the interests of both the Saudi and Costa Rican peoples.

Background of relations and context of the visit

This visit comes within the framework of the Kingdom's diplomatic strategy stemming from Vision 2030, which seeks to build effective economic and political partnerships with various countries around the world. Although formal diplomatic relations between the Kingdom and Costa Rica were established in 2015, they have witnessed remarkable development and a shared desire to explore new opportunities. Costa Rica is known for its globally leading environmental stances and its political stability in Central America, making it an important partner in international affairs, particularly regarding climate change.

The importance of the meeting and its expected impact

The discussions focused on several key areas, most notably economic and investment cooperation. The Kingdom, as a leading economic power, is seeking promising investment opportunities worldwide, while Costa Rica offers an attractive environment in sectors such as ecotourism, clean technology, and sustainable agriculture. The two ministers also discussed the importance of exchanging views and coordinating positions on regional and international issues of mutual interest, contributing to global security and stability.

Given that His Excellency Minister Al-Jubeir is the Kingdom’s Special Envoy for Climate Affairs, this issue was a central focus of the discussions. Costa Rica’s efforts to achieve carbon neutrality align with the Kingdom’s ambitious initiatives such as “Green Saudi Arabia” and“Green Middle East,” opening the door to fruitful cooperation in renewable energy, biodiversity conservation, and the exchange of expertise in environmentally friendly technologies. This meeting is expected to pave the way for reciprocal visits and the signing of agreements that will strengthen the long-term partnership between the two countries.

The meeting was attended by the non-resident Ambassador of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques to the Republic of Costa Rica, Mr. Hassan bin Mohammed Al-Ansari, which confirms the importance that the Kingdom attaches to these bilateral relations.
