The earliest sunrise in Saudi Arabia: an astronomical phenomenon that continues until the end of June

The Vice President of the Saudi Weather and Climate Society, Professor Abdullah Al-Musnad, revealed that most regions of Saudi Arabia are currently experiencing the earliest sunrise the year. Al-Musnad explained that this remarkable astronomical phenomenon will continue until the end of the second third of June, after which sunrise times will gradually begin to decrease.

The former professor of climate at Qassim University pointed out that this time change in sunrise and sunset is part of a precise natural cycle related to the movement of the Earth in its orbit around the sun and the tilt of its axis, which results in the succession of seasons and the change in the length of day and night throughout the year.

What is behind the phenomenon of the earliest sunrise?

Some might assume that the earliest sunrise coincides with the summer solstice (the longest day of the year), which falls on June 20 or 21, but the astronomical reality is more complex. This discrepancy stems from two main factors: the tilt of Earth's axis and the elliptical shape of Earth's orbit around the sun. This combination results in what's known as the "equation of time," the difference between true solar time and the mean solar time we use in our clocks. Consequently, the earliest sunrise occurs a few days before the summer solstice, while the latest sunset occurs a few days after, even though the summer solstice itself marks the longest period of clear daylight between sunrise and sunset.

Impact on daily life and society

This phenomenon is not merely an astronomical event; it has tangible implications for the lives of residents. Knowing the exact times of early sunrise allows individuals and institutions to better organize their work and study schedules and take advantage of the quiet and mild early morning hours. Al-Musnad also emphasized the health benefits of exposure to natural morning sunlight, which plays a vital role in regulating the body's biological clock, improving sleep quality and boosting daytime activity. Furthermore, sunlight contributes to stimulating the production of Vitamin D, essential for bone health and immunity. On a social and religious level, sunrise times are closely linked to prayer times, particularly Fajr (dawn prayer), making tracking these changes an integral part of the community's daily routine.

Al-Musnad concluded his remarks by describing this situation as a typical climatic and astronomical feature at this time of year, calling on everyone to take advantage of the moderate morning weather and benefit from the long daylight hours to accomplish tasks and engage in various activities, while emphasizing the need to follow updates issued by the relevant authorities.
