Saudi Arabia enters the Guinness World Records with 95 tons of seasonal seeds

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has written a new chapter in its record of global environmental achievements, with the National Center for Vegetation Development and Combating Desertification successfully setting a new Guinness World . This achievement is the establishment of the "world's largest seasonal seed storage collection," weighing over 95 tons, reflecting the Kingdom's unwavering commitment to protecting natural resources and promoting environmental sustainability.

Details of the record achievement

This achievement was not a coincidence, but rather the culmination of a year-long field and scientific effort. Specialized and highly trained field teams traversed the diverse terrains of the Kingdom, covering vast distances to secure these enormous quantities. The campaign aimed to collect seeds of native plants known for their adaptability to the region's climatic conditions, in order to support projects for the rehabilitation of degraded lands.

The operation involved collecting 31 species of native wild plants , which underwent a series of meticulous technical processes. These stages included seed purification, sorting to remove impurities and plant debris, and then processing and storing them in warehouses equipped to the highest international standards to ensure their safety and viability for extended periods.

Strategic dimension: Saudi Green Initiative

This record takes on particular significance when viewed in the context of the Saudi Green Initiative , which aims to plant 10 billion trees across the Kingdom in the coming decades. Maintaining a strategic reserve of local seeds (95 tons) is a cornerstone for achieving this ambitious goal. These seeds ensure a sufficient supply of seedlings for major projects without relying on imports, thus enhancing spending efficiency and guaranteeing high success rates for afforestation efforts due to the seeds' suitability to the local environment.

Promoting biodiversity and combating desertification

This step comes as part of a comprehensive national strategy to combat desertification, which is one of the biggest environmental challenges facing the region and the world. By reintroducing these rangeland and wild plants, the Kingdom is contributing to:

  • Soil stabilization and dust storm reduction.
  • Restoring biodiversity and returning wildlife to its natural habitats.
  • Improving air quality and reducing temperatures in targeted areas.

This achievement in the Guinness Book of Records confirms that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is not content with making environmental promises within Vision 2030, but rather translates them into tangible reality and record numbers, consolidating its position as a regional and global leader in the field of climate action and preserving the planet Earth.
