Saudi Arabia thwarts large-scale attack: 14 drones and ballistic missiles destroyed
The Coalition to Restore Legitimacy in Yemen announced, in a successful operation reflecting the high readiness of Saudi air defenses, the interception and destruction of a total of 14 explosive-laden drones and a ballistic missile launched by the Houthi terrorist militia toward Saudi Arabian territory. These hostile attempts targeted vital areas, including Al-Kharj Governorate and the Empty Quarter, in a dangerous escalation aimed at destabilizing security and stability in the region.
Saudi air defense efficiency
This successful operation reaffirms the efficiency and vigilance of the Royal Saudi Air Defense Forces and the Royal Saudi Air Force, which were able to detect and precisely intercept hostile threats before they reached their targets. The Houthi militias employ tactics that rely on launching swarms of drones simultaneously in an attempt to overwhelm defenses, but the Kingdom's advanced defense systems have proven their superior ability to neutralize these threats and protect civilian infrastructure and economic facilities.
The strategic importance of the targeted areas
The targeting of the Al-Kharj and Rub' al-Khali regions carries grave implications. Al-Kharj is a vital province with a high population density and important infrastructure south of the capital, Riyadh. The Rub' al-Khali, despite its desert nature, is home to giant oil fields and vital energy facilities (such as the Shaybah field). This indicates that these attacks target not only the Kingdom but also the lifeblood of the global economy and the security of international energy supplies. Attempting to target these areas constitutes a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and its customary rules.
Context of escalation and historical background
This attack is part of a long series of systematic assaults perpetrated by the Iranian-backed Houthi militia against the Kingdom. Historically, the militia has used ballistic missiles and drones as tools of political and military pressure, ignoring all international and UN calls for a ceasefire and negotiations. This behavior reflects a determination to prolong the conflict in Yemen and threaten neighboring countries.
International stance and impact of the attacks
These attacks are typically met with widespread international condemnation from the UN Security Council, the United States, the European Union, and Arab states, as they are viewed as a direct threat to regional peace and security. Saudi Arabia consistently affirms its legitimate right to defend its territory, citizens, and residents, and to take all necessary measures to deter such hostile acts in accordance with international law, while simultaneously continuing to support political efforts to end the Yemeni crisis.
