Saudi Arabia is participating with a large delegation in the 2024 Gulf Games in Doha
In a display of Gulf unity and solidarity, the fourth edition of the Gulf Games kicks off tomorrow evening, Monday, in Doha, the Qatari capital, and will run until May 22. More than 1,000 athletes representing all the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries will participate in this prominent regional sporting event, competing in a spirit of sportsmanship over the course of two weeks.
The official opening ceremony will take place at Al Shaqab Indoor Arena in Doha at 7:00 PM, and is expected to be a spectacular artistic and cultural showcase reflecting the shared Gulf heritage. The ceremony will feature Qatari artistic and folkloric performances, as well as a musical operetta entitled "One Gulf, One Heart," which embodies the deep fraternal ties between the peoples of the region.
Historical background and importance of the course
The Gulf Games, whose first edition was held in Bahrain in 2011, is a pivotal sporting platform aimed at strengthening sports cooperation and developing the capabilities of young people in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. This edition continues a successful tradition that began in Manama, then moved to Dammam, Saudi Arabia in 2015, Kuwait in 2022, and now Doha this year. The Games' significance lies in being a comprehensive sporting gathering that provides Gulf athletes with an opportunity to compete and interact, thus raising their technical and physical levels and preparing them to participate in major continental and international events.
Notable Saudi participation
The Saudi Olympic and Paralympic Committee announced the selection of Saudi fencer Nada Abed and Saudi taekwondo athlete Riyadh Hamdi to carry the Kingdom's flag in the parade of nations during the opening ceremony. This selection clearly demonstrates the growing support for both women's and men's sports in the Kingdom and honors the achievements of Saudi athletes in various arenas.
Saudi Arabia is participating with a large delegation of over 164 athletes competing in 15 different sports, including archery, athletics, handball, fencing, swimming, shooting, show jumping, taekwondo, billiards and snooker, bowling, karate, padel, table tennis, boxing, and 3x3 basketball. This extensive participation represents an important preparatory stage in a long competitive journey aimed at achieving the best results in the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya and the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar.
Regional and international impact
The impact of the Gulf Games extends beyond the sporting arena, fostering values of brotherhood and fair competition, and reflecting the deep historical and cultural ties between the peoples of the region. Hosting such events also contributes to strengthening the sports infrastructure in host countries and showcases the Gulf states' ability to organize major international tournaments, thus supporting the development of Gulf youth and enhancing the region's sporting standing on the global stage.
