Saudi Arabia provides urgent support to Yemen with $150 million for the electricity sector

Under the directives of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and His Royal Highness Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia announced an urgent aid package of US$150 million for the Republic of Yemen. This aid, provided through the Saudi Program for the Development and Reconstruction of Yemen, is earmarked for supplying the petroleum derivatives necessary to operate power plants in various Yemeni governorates.

The general context and the humanitarian crisis in Yemen

This support comes at a critical time for Yemen, which is suffering one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises as a result of years of conflict. The conflict has devastated vital infrastructure, including the energy sector, causing widespread power outages. This severe energy shortage not only affects the daily lives of citizens but also cripples essential facilities such as hospitals, water treatment plants, and schools, exacerbating the suffering of the Yemeni people. Therefore, providing fuel for power plants is a lifeline for millions of people who depend on these vital services.

The importance of support and its expected impact

Saudi support aims directly to alleviate human suffering by ensuring the continued operation of more than 70 diesel and fuel oil-fired power plants. Domestically, this fuel will contribute to a more stable electricity supply, particularly during the summer months when temperatures soar, thus ensuring the operation of hospitals and medical centers, the provision of potable water through pumping, and support for service and production sectors. This support is also expected to positively impact the stability of the local economy and improve the living conditions of citizens.

Regionally, this support underscores the pivotal role Saudi Arabia plays in upholding legitimacy in Yemen and striving for regional stability. It represents a continuation of the Kingdom's unwavering commitment to standing with the Yemeni people and helping them overcome economic and humanitarian challenges. Internationally, this initiative aligns with global efforts to address the Yemeni crisis, and the Kingdom stands out as one of the largest donors to Yemen in the areas of development and relief.

A long history of Saudi support for Yemen

This support is not the first of its kind; rather, it is an extension of a series of oil derivative grants provided by the Kingdom to Yemen over the years, which have had a tangible impact on stabilizing the energy sector. The Saudi Development and Reconstruction Program for Yemen provided similar grants in 2018 worth $180 million, in 2021 worth $422 million, and again in 2022 worth $200 million. These grants have contributed to enhancing the efficiency of Yemeni government institutions, stimulating the economy, and improving daily life. Overall, the program has implemented 287 development projects and initiatives across eight vital sectors, including education, health, energy, water, transportation, and agriculture, with the aim of supporting sustainable development in Yemen.
