Saudi Arabia in Geneva: Supporting the unity of Sudan and condemning the crimes of the Rapid Support Forces

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, through its Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva, reaffirmed its unwavering support for the unity and national sovereignty of Sudan, stressing the need to preserve its security, stability, and legitimate institutions amidst the current crisis gripping the country. This came during the interactive dialogue held regarding the oral briefing by the High Commissioner for Human Rights on the situation in Sudan, specifically the alarming developments in El Fasher and the surrounding areas.

Widespread condemnation of Rapid Support Forces abuses

In a statement delivered by the Kingdom’s Permanent Representative, Ambassador Abdulmohsen bin Khathila, Saudi Arabia expressed its strong condemnation and denunciation of the grave human rights violations committed by the Rapid Support Forces. The statement highlighted in particular the brutal attacks targeting El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur State, a vital hub for internally displaced persons and humanitarian operations. The Ambassador noted that these attacks were not limited to military targets but also included health facilities, aid convoys, and civilian infrastructure, resulting in the deaths of dozens of displaced persons and unarmed civilians, including women and children, in flagrant violation of international humanitarian law.

Adherence to the Jeddah Declaration and the humanitarian track

The Kingdom reiterated its demand for an immediate end to these violations, calling on the Rapid Support Forces to uphold their moral and legal obligations. The statement emphasized the importance of ensuring unimpeded access for humanitarian aid and relief to those in need, based on the Jeddah Declaration signed on May 11, 2023, which clearly stipulates the commitment to protecting civilians in Sudan and facilitating humanitarian operations.

General context and pivotal Saudi role

These Saudi diplomatic moves come within the framework of the Kingdom's ongoing efforts since the outbreak of the conflict in mid-April 2023. Riyadh, in cooperation with international and regional partners, has led intensive mediation efforts to bridge the gap between the conflicting parties. The Kingdom views the stability of Sudan as an integral part of the security of the Arab region and the Red Sea, warning that the continuation of the conflict not only threatens Sudan's internal security but also casts a dark shadow on regional and international security. This necessitates concerted international action to support peaceful solutions and end the humanitarian suffering of the brotherly Sudanese people.
