Saudi-UN warning: Risk of supply disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, through its Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Abdulaziz Al-Wasil, reiterated its emphasis on the utmost strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz, warning that any threat to freedom of navigation in this vital waterway would have dire consequences for the global economy and international supply chains.
This firm stance was expressed during a joint press conference between the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and the United States, held to discuss a draft resolution on protecting freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. Al-Wasil explained that any disruption to this vital trade route not only affects the region but also has a direct and immediate impact on the stability of global energy markets and jeopardizes their security.
The strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most important waterways, if not the most important, through which approximately one-fifth of the world's oil consumption passes, in addition to enormous quantities of liquefied natural gas. This strait, which separates the Persian Gulf from the Gulf of Oman, connects major economies in Asia, Europe, and North America to vital energy resources in the Middle East. Historically, the strait has been the scene of numerous geopolitical tensions and has witnessed frequent incidents that have threatened the stability of navigation, making it a pivotal point in international security calculations.
Expected regional and international impacts
A disruption to shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, even for a brief period, would send shockwaves through global markets. The immediate impact would be a sharp and immediate spike in oil and gas prices, driving up energy costs for consumers and businesses worldwide and exacerbating inflationary pressures already affecting many economies. Regionally, any closure of the strait would cripple exports from the Gulf states, which rely almost entirely on it for their energy exports, threatening their economic stability. Internationally, global economic growth would be negatively impacted, and some countries could even enter recessions as a result of the disruption to energy supplies and the resulting price hikes.
Call for coordinated international action
In his address, Ambassador Al-Wasel not only warned of the economic repercussions but also highlighted the serious humanitarian dimensions that could result from any disruption to the flow of essential goods and humanitarian aid through the strait. He stressed the need to protect maritime security and ensure the safe and continuous flow of international trade in accordance with the principles of international law. The Kingdom called for coordinated international action to de-escalate tensions in the region and prevent the escalation of any crisis that could threaten this vital waterway, emphasizing that strengthening international cooperation is the only way to safeguard regional and international peace and security and protect this artery of the global economy from any potential risks.
