Today's weather in Saudi Arabia: Thunderstorms and strong winds
The National Center for Meteorology issued its daily weather report for Saudi Arabia, warning of significant weather fluctuations affecting several regions of the Kingdom. This forecast is part of the Center's ongoing monitoring efforts to ensure the safety of citizens and residents. Thunderstorms of moderate to heavy intensity are expected, which may lead to flash floods in valleys and ravines.
Weather details across the Kingdom's regions
The report indicated that this weather pattern will be accompanied by hail showers and strong winds that will stir up dust and sand. These winds are expected to cause near-zero horizontal visibility across large parts of the Northern Borders, Al-Jawf, Tabuk, Hail, Al-Qassim, Madinah, and Makkah regions. In contrast, other areas, such as the Eastern Province, Riyadh, Al-Baha, Asir, Jazan, and Najran, will experience light to moderate rainfall, resulting in relatively mild weather in those regions.
Maritime navigation situation: Red Sea and Arabian Gulf
Regarding maritime navigation, the center indicated that the Red Sea will experience surface winds blowing from the southeast to the southwest at speeds ranging from 21 to 42 km/h. Wind speeds may exceed 60 km/h with the formation of thunderstorms and rain, particularly over the northern and central parts. Wave heights will range from one to two meters, and may reach more than three meters in areas of thunderstorms, resulting in sea conditions ranging from slight to moderate, occasionally becoming rough.
In the Arabian Gulf, surface winds will be northwesterly to northerly at speeds ranging from 17 to 34 km/h. Wave height will be between half a meter and one and a half meters, resulting in sea conditions ranging from slight to moderate, making it more stable compared to the Red Sea.
General context: Climate diversity in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is characterized by its vast area and diverse topography, making it susceptible to varying weather patterns across its different regions. Historically, the Kingdom experiences periods of atmospheric instability during seasonal transitions, characterized by heavy thunderstorms and strong surface winds. The National Center of Meteorology plays a vital and pivotal role in monitoring these climatic changes and issuing early warnings, in close cooperation with the General Directorate of Civil Defense and other relevant authorities, to mitigate potential risks and protect lives and property.
Impact of weather conditions at the local and regional levels
These weather changes have multifaceted impacts. Locally, the heavy rainfall contributes to replenishing groundwater reserves and supports the agricultural sector, which is heavily reliant on rainwater in some areas. However, flash floods and reduced visibility necessitate extreme caution from drivers on highways to avoid traffic accidents. Regionally and internationally, the accuracy of Saudi weather forecasts contributes to the safety of regional and international air traffic transiting the Kingdom's airspace, as well as ensuring the security of maritime navigation in the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf, which are among the most important waterways for global trade.
Official authorities always urge caution and vigilance, staying away from valleys and flood channels during rainfall, and following the continuous updates issued by the National Center for Meteorology through its official channels to ensure public safety for all.
