Today's weather: Sandstorms and dust-raising winds in Saudi Arabia

The National Center for Meteorology warns of sandstorms

The National Center for Meteorology in Saudi Arabia issued its detailed daily report on the expected weather conditions for Monday across the Kingdom. The report predicted strong surface winds across large parts of the Northern Borders, Al-Jawf, and Tabuk regions. These active winds will lead to dense sandstorms, causing a significant deterioration and near-zero horizontal visibility, necessitating extreme caution from drivers on highways.

The extent of the impact of winds that stir up dust and sand

Meanwhile, the impact of active winds stirring up dust and sand continues to affect parts of the Hail, Qassim, Eastern Province, and Najran regions. This impact extends to parts of the Makkah region, where near-zero horizontal visibility is expected. These weather changes are a result of atmospheric pressure variations and seasonal fluctuations in the Arabian Peninsula, a geographically active environment for such climatic phenomena, particularly during the transitional periods between seasons.

Chances of thunderstorms and temperature variations

In contrast to the dusty conditions in the north and central regions, there remains a chance of thunderstorms, possibly accompanied by downdrafts, over parts of the mountainous areas of Jazan, Asir, Al-Baha, and extending to the highlands of the Makkah region. This climatic diversity reflects the Kingdom's unique geography. Meanwhile, hot to very hot weather is expected in parts of western Saudi Arabia, including coastal areas, necessitating avoiding direct sun exposure during peak hours.

Historical context and the impact of sandstorms

Historically, sandstorms and dust storms have been an integral part of the climate of Saudi Arabia and the surrounding region, occurring at specific times of the year due to climate change. These storms impact vital sectors such as air and land transport, in addition to their health effects on those with respiratory conditions. Therefore, the proactive reports issued by the National Center of Meteorology are crucial in minimizing losses and protecting lives and property through early warnings and ongoing guidance.

Maritime navigation situation: Red Sea and Arabian Gulf

Red Sea

Regarding maritime conditions in the Red Sea, the report indicated that surface winds would be southeasterly to southwesterly in the northern part, and northwesterly to northeasterly in the central and southern parts. Wind speeds would range from 17 to 36 kilometers per hour. Wave heights would range from half a meter to one and a half meters, resulting in a slight to moderate sea state, allowing for normal maritime activities with caution.

Arabian Gulf

Regarding the Arabian Gulf, surface winds will be westerly to southwesterly in the northern part and northwesterly to westerly in the central and southern parts, with speeds ranging from 15 to 35 kilometers per hour. Wave heights will be similar to those in the Red Sea, ranging from half a meter to one and a half meters, and sea conditions will be generally slight to moderate.
