Today's weather in Saudi Arabia (Saturday): Cold, foggy, and brisk winds

The National Center for Meteorology has released details of the expected weather conditions for today, Saturday, with relevant authorities issuing important alerts to citizens and residents regarding the continued weather fluctuations affecting several regions of the Kingdom. This report is part of ongoing monitoring of the weather situation to ensure everyone's safety and to urge caution while traveling.

Cold and frost continue in the northern and central regions

According to the official statement issued by the Meteorology Department, weather maps indicate that cold to very cold weather will persist across wide areas, including the north and central regions of the Kingdom. This drop in temperatures is not limited to open areas but extends to the mountainous regions of Makkah and Al-Baha. The chances of fog and frost formation increase during the late night and early morning hours, which may significantly reduce horizontal visibility in parts of these areas. This necessitates particular caution from drivers on highways.

Wind activity and dust storms

In a related context, the center warned of the continued impact of active winds that may stir up dust and sand, reducing horizontal visibility in certain areas. This weather activity is concentrated in parts of the Eastern Province, as well as parts of the Tabuk, Madinah, and Makkah regions, particularly their coastal areas. These weather phenomena are considered part of the typical climatic characteristics for this time of year, as cold air currents from the north become active.

The climatic context and the effects of winter in the Kingdom

This weather pattern is typical of winter in Saudi Arabia, a season known for its significant temperature variations across different regions due to the Kingdom's diverse geography. Northern regions, due to their proximity to polar air masses, are generally more susceptible to severe cold waves and frost, while coastal areas experience varying levels of humidity and active winds. This time of year is vital for desert vegetation, but it requires special preparations from residents to cope with the cold, particularly regarding safe heating methods and appropriate winter clothing.

The importance of caution and public safety

Due to forecasts of fog and frost, as well as dust in some areas, weather and traffic safety experts advise maintaining safe distances between vehicles, using fog lights when necessary, and avoiding high speeds. Those with respiratory conditions and asthma in dust-affected areas are also advised to take necessary precautions and avoid direct exposure to dusty conditions to protect their health.

State of the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf

Regarding the sea conditions, the center provided the following details:

Red Sea

  • Surface winds: They will be northeasterly to northerly at a speed of 15-40 km/h over the northern and central parts, and will turn northwesterly to southwesterly at a speed of 10-25 km/h over the southern part.
  • Wave height: ranging from one to two meters on the northern and central parts, and from half a meter to one meter on the southern part.
  • Sea state: Light to moderate waves in the north and center, and light waves in the south.

Arabian Gulf

  • Surface winds: Westerly to northwesterly at a speed of 20-40 km/h, and may reach speeds of more than 50 km/h with the formation of rain-bearing thunderclouds.
  • Wave height: from one to two meters, and may exceed two meters in the event of thunderstorms.
  • Sea state: Moderate to occasionally rough with thunderstorms.
