The Cabinet approves the establishment of the Kingdom University in Riyadh

In a strategic move aimed at strengthening the higher education sector and developing national talent, the Saudi Cabinet, during its session held in Jeddah and chaired by His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, approved the establishment of the “Kingdom University” in the capital, Riyadh. This decision underscores the great importance the leadership places on the education sector as a fundamental pillar in achieving the goals of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030.

Context of the decision and its strategic dimensions

The decision to establish a new university in the heart of the capital is part of the Kingdom's comprehensive national transformation. Since launching Vision 2030, Saudi Arabia has prioritized human capital development, believing that qualified youth are the true engine of sustainable development and a knowledge-based economy. The Kingdom University continues a long history of investment in education, which began decades ago with the establishment of pioneering universities such as King Saud University and King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, which have contributed to graduating generations of leaders and specialists.

The importance and expected impact of the Kingdom University

The establishment of the “Kingdom University” is expected to have a multi-dimensional impact at the local, regional and international levels:

  • At the local level, the university will contribute to increasing higher education capacity in Riyadh and providing modern specializations that align with future labor market demands, such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, renewable energy, and biotechnology. It will also become a center for scientific research and innovation, supporting local businesses, stimulating entrepreneurship, and contributing to the goals of the human capital development program.
  • At the regional level: The university will enhance the Kingdom’s position as a leading educational destination in the Middle East region, capable of attracting outstanding students and researchers from neighboring countries, thus promoting cultural and academic exchange.
  • At the international level, the project aims to build a world-class academic institution capable of partnering with leading universities and research institutions worldwide. This will raise the global ranking of Saudi universities and make them more competitive on the international stage.

This decision comes in the context of other decisions taken by the Council, as it affirmed the Kingdom’s leadership and global role in supporting multilateral international action, enabling innovation and adopting artificial intelligence technologies, which is reflected in the selection of Riyadh as a center for digital government affiliated with the United Nations, which confirms building a more inclusive and sustainable digital future.
