Dairy production in Saudi Arabia: 2.7 million liters per day during Ramadan

The Saudi Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture emphasized the importance of consuming locally produced dairy products during the holy month of Ramadan, highlighting the vital role this sector plays in enhancing food security and supporting the national economy. This emphasis coincides with a production surge in the Kingdom, with daily output exceeding 2.75 million liters, reflecting the efficiency of supply chains and the strength of domestic production.
"Our Land's Bounty" campaign and record numbers
As part of its ongoing awareness campaign under the slogan "The Bounty of Our Land," the Ministry explained that the dairy sector is one of the most prominent success stories in the Saudi agricultural sector. National products are distinguished by their great diversity, including fresh milk, laban (strained yogurt), yogurt, cream, and various types of cheese. This massive production, which is supplied to the markets daily, not only covers the increased local demand during the holy month but also generates a surplus for export, demonstrating the ability of national companies to meet demand efficiently and with high quality that rivals, and even surpasses, international standards.
A success story of transforming the desert into production centers
This enormous figure (2.7 million liters per day) cannot be viewed in isolation from the historical context and technological advancements the Kingdom has witnessed. Despite its desert landscape and arid climate, Saudi Arabia has managed to build one of the most sophisticated dairy production systems in the world. The Kingdom has relied on advanced cooling technologies, automated milking systems, and superior veterinary care, resulting in Saudi farms achieving some of the highest milk production rates globally. This transformation from complete importation in previous decades to self-sufficiency and exporting serves as a model for overcoming environmental challenges to achieve food security.
Alignment with the Kingdom's Vision 2030
This achievement aligns directly with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030, which prioritizes food security and the sustainability of natural resources. Supporting local dairy production not only ensures food availability but also enhances local content, creates thousands of job opportunities for young Saudis in production, distribution, and quality control, and supports small-scale livestock farmers, integrating them into the economic development process.
Nutritional value in Ramadan
From a health perspective, the Ministry emphasized the high nutritional value of dairy products, especially for those fasting. These products are a primary source of calcium, protein, and vitamins, and help maintain hydration after long hours of fasting. The Ministry urged consumers to make locally produced goods their first choice for Iftar and Suhoor meals, supporting the national economy and ensuring access to fresh, safe, and rigorously regulated products.
