“Recycle Your Device” Initiative: Recycling 960 Tons of Electronic Waste in Saudi Arabia
The Communications, Space and Technology Commission announced that the national “Recycle Your Device” initiative for recycling electronic devices has achieved a significant milestone, successfully collecting and recycling more than 960 tons of devices, equivalent to more than 400,000 electronic devices, since its launch and towards the target date of the end of 2025. This initiative comes as a strategic step to enhance environmental sustainability and support the circular economy in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, with broad participation from government and private entities and more than 40,000 individuals.
General context: Addressing the challenge of electronic waste
In light of the rapid technological advancements the world is witnessing, electronic waste has become one of the fastest-growing environmental challenges. In line with the comprehensive digital transformation spearheaded by Saudi Vision 2030, the consumption of electronic devices in the Kingdom is increasing, necessitating innovative and sustainable solutions for managing this waste. It was with this in mind that the “Recycle Your Device” initiative was launched in 2022 through a joint effort between the Communications and Space Technology Commission, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, and the National Center for Waste Management (Mawan), with the aim of creating an integrated system for collecting, repairing, and recycling unused electronic devices.
The importance and expected impact of the initiative
The initiative's significance extends far beyond mere numbers, encompassing profound environmental, social, and economic dimensions. Environmentally, recycling 960 tons of waste helps reduce soil and groundwater pollution from hazardous materials like lead and mercury, alleviates pressure on landfills, and facilitates the extraction of valuable metals that can be reused in industry. Socially, the initiative bridges the digital divide by repairing usable devices and distributing them to those in need. More than 120 educational institutions and charities have been supported, enabling thousands of students and families to access digital learning and connectivity. Economically, the market value of the collected devices is estimated at over 120 million riyals, embodying the concept of a circular economy that transforms waste into valuable resources and fosters the creation of new opportunities in the recycling sector.
The Kingdom's regional and international standing
These results position Saudi Arabia among the leading countries regionally in the sustainable management of electronic waste. The “Recycle Your Device” initiative serves as a model for the region, integrating environmental and social responsibility with economic viability. This achievement aligns with the Kingdom’s broader commitments, such as the Saudi Green Initiative, and reflects its ongoing efforts to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 12 on responsible consumption and production. The initiative’s success reinforces the Kingdom’s image as a key player in addressing global environmental challenges and underscores its commitment to building a sustainable digital future and a more inclusive society.
