Saudi Defense Minister discusses Iranian threats with his Greek counterpart
The importance of a high-level strategy and coordination
In a move reflecting the depth of the strategic relationship between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Hellenic Republic, His Royal Highness Prince Khalid bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, the Saudi Minister of Defense, met on Wednesday with the Greek Minister of National Defense, Nikos Dendias. This meeting comes at a crucial time, as the Middle East region faces rapidly escalating security challenges that necessitate high-level coordination between allied and friendly nations to ensure regional and international stability.
Details of the bilateral talks
During the bilateral meeting, a comprehensive review of prospects for joint cooperation between Riyadh and Athens was conducted, particularly in the military and defense fields. The two sides focused on ways to develop the strategic partnership and exchange military expertise, in addition to discussing current developments in the region. The repercussions of the continued Iranian attacks targeting Saudi Arabian territory and several other countries in the region topped the agenda, highlighting the blatant violation of international laws and norms and the direct impact of these actions on international peace and security.
Historical background of Saudi-Greek military relations
Historically, Saudi Arabia and Greece have enjoyed close and growing relations, particularly in the military and defense sectors. Recent years have witnessed a series of joint military exercises and drills, most notably the "Falcon Eye" exercise, which brought together the air forces of both countries and aimed to enhance combat readiness and standardize operational concepts. This strategic cooperation was further demonstrated by Greece's deployment of Patriot air defense systems to the Kingdom to contribute to protecting critical infrastructure and global energy resources from terrorist attacks, underscoring Athens' commitment to the security of the Arabian Gulf as an integral part of global security.
Regional and international repercussions of Iranian threats
Regionally, these talks are of paramount importance given Iran’s continued destabilizing behavior. Tehran’s support for armed militias and its provision of drones and ballistic missiles not only threaten the Kingdom’s security but also extend to maritime security in the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf, two of the world’s most vital waterways for trade. Saudi-Greek coordination represents a forward diplomatic and military front for countering these threats and working to establish security in the Mediterranean and Middle East regions.
Internationally, the Saudi-Greek cooperation is viewed by the international community as a vital element of stability. The Kingdom, as a major economic power and a key energy supplier, and Greece, with its geostrategic position as a gateway to Europe, play a pivotal role in safeguarding global supply chains. Any threat to regional security inevitably impacts the global economy; therefore, the unification of visions and efforts between the two countries strengthens the international community's ability to address security challenges and curb Iranian expansionism, which threatens global peace.
