Saudi Arabia supports Yemen with 1.9 billion riyals: new development projects

In accordance with the directives of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, Crown Prince and Prime Minister - may God protect them - and in continuation of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s firm approach to supporting the brotherly Yemeni people, the Saudi Program for the Development and Reconstruction of Yemen announced the launch of a huge package of vital development projects and initiatives.

This step comes with the direct follow-up of His Royal Highness Prince Khalid bin Salman, Minister of Defense, as the value of the new support amounts to 1.9 billion Saudi riyals, and includes 28 projects and initiatives covering strategic sectors, in addition to a new grant for oil derivatives aimed at ensuring the continuity of the operation of electricity stations in all Yemeni governorates.

Details of the new development package

The new package aims to strengthen infrastructure and improve the quality of life in liberated Yemeni governorates, including Aden, Hadramawt, Al Mahrah, Socotra, Marib, Shabwah, Abyan, Al Dhale'a, Lahj, and Taiz. The projects focus on four key sectors: health, energy, education, and transportation, in full coordination with the Yemeni government and local authorities to ensure that the most urgent needs are met.

These projects add to a long list of achievements, as the program is currently implementing 27 projects and initiatives that will be delivered during 2026 and 2027, joining more than 240 completed projects and initiatives delivered by the program since its establishment in 2018, reflecting the Kingdom’s long-term commitment to the stability and development of Yemen.

A qualitative leap in basic services

In the interim capital, Aden, the projects include impactful initiatives that will make a tangible difference in the lives of residents. The most prominent of these is the construction of the first desalination plant, a strategic project to address the scarcity of fresh water and achieve water security. Support also includes the continued operation of Prince Mohammed bin Salman Hospital and the rehabilitation of Aden International Airport (phases two and three) to improve air navigation efficiency and connect Yemen to the outside world, thereby boosting trade and economic activity.

In the education and health sector in other governorates, the plans include the establishment of Hadramout University Hospital, the operation of King Salman Medical and Educational City in Al-Mahra, the establishment of colleges specializing in computer science and applied sciences, in addition to building and equipping 30 model schools distributed across several governorates to ensure a stimulating educational environment for Yemeni students.

The economic and strategic impact of support

This support is not limited to relief efforts alone; it also has profound developmental and economic dimensions. The grant of petroleum derivatives will directly contribute to stabilizing the electricity grid, which will positively impact the operation of hospitals, schools, and government facilities, and stimulate the economy by supporting commercial and industrial activities.

Road projects, such as the rehabilitation of the Al-Abr-Sayun road and the completion of the Al-Abr road in Marib, are vital arteries for safe transportation and the movement of goods between governorates, contributing to reduced transport costs and stimulating domestic trade. This comprehensive support underscores the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's commitment to transitioning Yemen from the relief phase to a phase of sustainable development and building state institutions capable of efficiently and effectively serving its citizens.
