Saudi-Dutch agreement for the agricultural treatment of poultry waste

In a strategic move reflecting the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's commitment to developing the agricultural sector and protecting the environment, His Excellency the Deputy Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture, Engineer Mansour bin Hilal Al-Mashiti, oversaw the signing of a memorandum of understanding for strategic and commercial cooperation with a leading Dutch company. This collaboration aims to find innovative solutions for managing poultry farm waste and maximizing its utilization by transforming it into products with added economic value, thus supporting initiatives of mutual interest and enhancing investment opportunities between the two countries.

Historical background and strategic context within Vision 2030

This agreement comes at a time when Saudi Arabia is undergoing radical transformations as part of its Vision 2030, which prioritizes environmental sustainability and food security. The Kingdom's poultry sector has made significant strides in recent years toward achieving high levels of self-sufficiency, naturally leading to increased production volumes and a corresponding rise in organic waste. This has created an urgent need to adopt modern technologies for treating these wastes in safe and sustainable ways, in line with the Saudi Green Initiative, which aims to reduce carbon emissions and protect natural resources.

Promoting the circular economy and agricultural sustainability

The signed agreement includes a comprehensive strategy for high-level cooperation to explore and enhance shared opportunities. This strategy focuses on providing practical solutions that promote resource efficiency, along with supporting pioneering initiatives in the circular economy. The circular economy is an environmental and economic concept that aims to eliminate waste by transforming waste that was an environmental burden into new production inputs, thus ensuring the long-term sustainability of the agricultural sector.

Framework agreement for the production and marketing of organic fertilizers

In addition to the memorandum of understanding, the Deputy Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture oversaw the signing of a framework agreement for technical cooperation and data exchange. This agreement primarily aims to facilitate the import and marketing of organic fertilizers produced from poultry waste processing. This approach achieves optimal integration between processing and reuse stages, providing sustainable economic benefits to local farmers by supplying high-quality organic fertilizers as a safe and effective alternative to chemical fertilizers, which will positively impact soil health and crop quality.

The importance and expected impact of Saudi-Dutch cooperation

This collaboration is of paramount importance on several levels. Locally, it will contribute to creating new investment opportunities in the waste management and fertilizer production sector, thus supporting the local economy. Regionally, this project positions the Kingdom as a leading model in the Middle East for the sustainable management of agricultural waste. Internationally, the partnership with the Netherlands – a global leader in agricultural innovation and green technologies – underscores the Kingdom's commitment to exchanging technical expertise and feedback on the results of its use and trials, as well as coordinating joint technical visits and related meetings, thereby strengthening global efforts to achieve sustainable food security.
