Saudi Arabia's efforts in the reconstruction of Yemen: development projects and the path to recovery

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia continues its leading and pivotal role in supporting the sisterly Republic of Yemen, not only in the humanitarian and relief spheres, but also through a comprehensive strategy aimed at reconstruction and achieving sustainable economic recovery. These intensive efforts are a practical manifestation of the deep fraternal and historical ties that bind the two countries. Through its various institutions, most notably the Saudi Program for the Development and Reconstruction of Yemen, the Kingdom seeks to lift Yemen out of its accumulated crises and set it on a path of genuine development.
The Saudi Program for the Development and Reconstruction of Yemen: A Pillar of Stability
The Saudi Development and Reconstruction Program for Yemen (SDRPY) is a cornerstone of current Saudi efforts. Operating according to a strategic vision encompassing seven vital sectors that directly impact the lives of Yemeni citizens, the program focuses on health, education, energy, transportation, water, agriculture and fisheries, and building the capacity of government institutions. SDRPY has implemented hundreds of development projects and initiatives across various Yemeni governorates, ranging from constructing schools and hospitals to rehabilitating airports and seaports and paving roads. This has significantly contributed to improving basic services and creating job opportunities for the local workforce.
Supporting the economy and the national currency
In addition to infrastructure projects, Saudi Arabia played a crucial role in preventing the complete collapse of the Yemeni economy. The Kingdom provided billions in deposits to the Central Bank of Yemen to bolster foreign currency reserves, which helped curb inflation and achieve relative stability in the Yemeni rial's exchange rate against foreign currencies. Furthermore, the Saudi oil derivatives grant continued to power electricity plants in the liberated governorates, alleviating the suffering of citizens and providing the necessary energy for the continued operation of hospitals, vital facilities, and commercial activities.
Strategic and regional importance
The importance of these efforts extends beyond Yemen's local context to encompass regional and international dimensions. Restoring Yemen's economic and service sectors is a fundamental factor in strengthening security and stability in the Arabian Peninsula and the Red Sea region. Improving the living conditions of Yemenis reduces dependence on emergency aid and moves the country toward production and self-sufficiency, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals and the international community's efforts to achieve peace. Saudi Arabia's commitment to Yemen reflects a long-term vision that recognizes Yemen's stability as an integral part of the stability of the entire region.
